Having a baby Old Style???

One of mine slept in a 'carrycot' for the first couple of months - he looked totally lost in the 'big cot'! Another slept in the top of the pram which was carried up/down the stairs every morning/night. Both of those fitted at the side of our bed and covered the first few months. They can go into their own cot in own room when a little older - maybe when they start to sleep through or when they need something bigger to sleep in.0

When buying clothes I found that the ones with press studs were loads easier to deal with. I didn't use the vests and trousers without them in the end because I found it was such a faff having to strip the small person entirely when changing his bottom. Once you've got your car seat make sure you know how to operate it before your baby thing arrives...I didn't and my brain was in a very scrambled muddle just after giving birth. If you're having a boy can I recommend having a flannel or something to cover his nether regions in the changing bag...right from day one little boys believe that they've been given a fireman's hose and will spray with it accordingly:rotfl: :rotfl: Not so funny when you're out for the day and you're the target practice!! Lastly this book was recommended to me....I found my experience often matched and I felt a as prepared as I could be when presented with a small person who hadn't read any set of rules:D It's informative but also funny

JackieO strikes again:rotfl:Jackie I had my four kids in the 70s and 80s, but your post rings so true for me too:D Oh the joys of the baby burco!!! Whitest nappies in the area, next door who had a washing machine, couldn't hold a candle to mine;) Even when I had a WM ( bought just after DS1 was born) I still used burco for all the nappies. I too had mixed fortunes with breastfeeding, and whilst it is obviously ideal the one who only got a short while didn't suffer compared with the ones who got much longer.
It strikes me that nowadays there are so many *experts* and such an avalanche of advice, nay *instructions* on how to raise children that it's a wonder anyone manages it. My advice (:o to add to the mountain:rotfl:) would be try to listen to your instincts. Not that easy when they can be so easily suffocated by the *knowingness* that surrounds us. Keep it simple, and you can't go far wrong. I've yet to meet a baby that didn't adore a wooden spoon and a saucepan to hit, even in preference to an all singing, all dancing musical monstrosity of a toy:D;)You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Tax credits website has a "Do I qualify" page where you put in all your details to see how much you are entitled to. I used this to see what the difference would be if I returned to work/reduced my hours/didn't go back and it was really useful because it gave an indication of what we were entitled to. We assumed that I would have to go back to work because of the money but in fact, I was able to reduce to 2 days and we aren't that much worse off.
Moses baskets last 5 minutes so if you can borrow one it'll save a fortune.
For the first 6 months, they are in and out of clothes at the speed of light and often get covered in sick/wee and poo! We kept our 2nd in sleepsuits morning noon and night until he was 3 months and then the neighbour gave us loads of clothes - the first had combat trousers/jeans/jumpers etc etc in every age group going and they got sold on brand new at a car boot sale.
We spent a hideous amount on a pushchair with our first and ditched it for a stroller after 4 months! We didn't make the same mistake with the second!
After 3 high chairs with number one - they all got ditched for one of those booster seats you attach to a normal chair!
Muslin cloths are great for mopping up sick, spills etc and for going under your baby when changing their bum on cold surfaces.
We had a free changing bag from boots when we joined the parenting club and this has a changing mat inside.
Join up to bounty when you are in hospital - they send you loads of vouchers and freebies.
Pampers/Hipp/Tesco and I'm sure others - offer baby clubs and send out vouchers.
One more thing I'd add to the labour bag is a headband - my fringe was REALLY annoying when i was in labour0 -
When in labour don't forget the thick socks - your feet get really cold.0

My tip is to make some signs for your front / back door which read
'Mum and baby resting please do not disturb'
and don't be afraid to use them.
Good luck and have fun its the best time of your life.xx:beer: Officially Debt Free Nov 2012 :beer:0 -
