Phoning US mobile in the US, from a UK mobile.

Should be just a case of dialing the local US number, no prefixes. For example (234) 235 5678 (plucked from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Numbering_Plan).
But cost will still be high to use a UK mobile in the US.
Personally I would get a local sim card and use that for calls with a service like Rebtel for additional benefit.0 -
That's what I tried initially, but it came back unsent.
May have been reception issues.
I'll try again when everyone's up!! Bloody jet lag!
I'll look into the sim card.
Thanks for your help.0 -

Calling and sending messages to US numbers should be a case of putting +1 in front of them. You don't need to put anything else in front of them, In the UK you drop the leading zero so 01234 567890 becomes +44 1234 567890 but in the US 123 456-7890 becomes +1 123 456-7890
Message not sent may indicate the SMS message centre number is not right or is a UK format (ie 07 not +44 7) or you do not have roaming setup and working correctly.0 -
Good advice. T-Mobile USA are selling them for $2 at http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-KitPersonally I would get a local sim card and use that for calls with a service like Rebtel for additional benefit.
You get unlimited calls for $1/day, and additionally unlimited data for $2/day.0 -

Thanks for that. I guess it will take a while to be delivered, so I'll try in store.
Just noticed my wife's phone displays T-Mobile, whereas mine's on AT&T. Normal or strange?
And I can't seem to send a picture message. Normal messages are OK. This could be expensive if I don't get this other SIM.0 -
Just make sure your mobile isn't SIM-locked to T-Mobile UK. Although T-Mobile UK and T-Mobile USA have the same branding, their SIM cards appear to your phone as separate and unrelated networks. Thanks for that. I guess it will take a while to be delivered, so I'll try in store.

This is normal. Your phones will log on to whichever network has the strongest signal and will stay that way until they lose the signal, and will then search for another network.0 -
OK.
+1 worked in the end, but I can't send picture messages. Normal SMS are fine. Any idea why picture message don't work?
Best regards0 -

You don't say what type of phone you have but my android Galaxy S requires a data link to send picture messages.
I just don't send picture messages when abroad due to the data cost. I attach them to emails and wait until I find a free wifi facility to send them.0 -
If you do go into a T-Mobile USA shop, I'd be interested to know how much they charge for a prepaid microSIM. They don't sell them on their web site, but I heard a rumour they might sell them in their shops. Thanks for that. I guess it will take a while to be delivered, so I'll try in store.0 -

Thanks, I'll try the T-Mobile store and let you know.
We're both using iPhone. One is connected to AT&T, one to T-Mobile.
Both of us can't send picture messages.
