Now Quentin is suggesting giving regular monthly readings is a bad idea?

    Where have I suggested that?

As carmine is no more, it seems the uw now have a new spin doctor here!

I believe not for changing gas and electricity.

Even if there were to save £323 it would be worth it!!!

    Go for it!!!
  • I'm not aware of any tie-in clauses that should stop you - I just switched from UW myself. There was no minimum length contract when I joined.

Funnily enough I switched to UW from Scottishpower back in 2005. I was on an online tariff and found the management of my bills very simple. They were an easy company to deal with and when I left them my account was in credit to the tune of almost £200 (due to my oversight -meter readings). They issued a cheque immediately without prompting and it came with a very pleasant letter. If they were the cheapest in my area now I'd have no hesitation.

Generally try to keep off this thread (well, posting anyway), but can't let this one past (a pet hate).

Two of the 3 readings have to be given 9 months apart, so hardly designed as a social aid to those who get in a mess with estimated readings! And the last of the three cannot be given till the first 12 months are up for both gas and electricity,
To make inputting readings worthwhile, they need to be a significant time apart.
What would the use be of putting in readings in June, July & August, but not for the rest of the year?
All suppliers use a system to estimate reads, and this relies on having something to base them on. 3 reads in different seasons is a very good start.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'social aid', but it would definitely help with the problem of inaccurate estimated bills.

Putting in a reading more often will be even better.
More readings = more accurate estimates & more accurate DDs.

Their are no penalties for leaving and Scottish Power cashback is now up to £120 at http://www.quidco.com/scottish-power/

I was just nabbed in a local supermarket by reps from this company and was shown graphs and league tables which put them ahead of everyone for telephone/broadband/gas and electricity. Id never heard of them. They also said that you can get cash back on (a very limited) number of in store buys. When I said I used quidco for that sort of thing online and I had talktalk all in one for phone/internet I was sort of dismissed and they went on to the next poor soul.

I asked if they had been on this site and they said no, they wouldnt pay a sub for it :)

So are they not the wonderful company they say they are then? I was actually going to look up their gas and electricity prices

Which does make me laugh considering its a free site and they would expect you to pay a sub (or "membership fee") for joing them

If you do be sure to scroll right down to the bottom of the comparison list as thats where they will be (the "savings" may well have a - in front of them too indicating that this is how much more they will cost you)
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

I suggest you do look up their gas and electricity prices and you will find that the average customer pays £hundreds more for their gas and electricity with UW - on average about 30% more than the cheapest.

    I posted this earlier:

There are a lot of UW salesmen on this thread trying to promote their product, so for the benefit of new readers, and existing UW customers, be advised that:

UW gas and electricity is just about the most expensive in UK and £hundreds more than the cheapest tariff - generally around 30%.

That fact can be confirmed by checking the tariffs in any comparison website or by comparing the tariffs yourself. Use the WHICH comparison website if you wish.

There is no need to listen to either side of the argument on this thread, just confirm the facts with any independent source.

As an example the average UK customer uses 20,500kWh gas and 3,300kWh electricity. In my area(Midlands) that will cost £894 with the cheapest supplier, the cheapest UW tariff is £1,199. That is £305 and 34% more expensive if you are silly enough to have UW as your gas and electricity supplier.

To give a actual example, Essexmum(a UW customer) posted on this thread “my usage is Gas 20478 kWh pa Electric 8667 kWh pa precisely” and sought advice on how to save money – which strangely is what MSE is all about!

The cheapest tariff for her consumption in Essex would be £1,286.

The cheapest UW tariff would cost £1,753

So that is £467 more or 36% more expensive than the cheapest tariff.

She is leaving UW – can you blame her?

If you want to see some more posts from operastar, look up any of the 1,300 posts 1carminestocky(the other name he used on this thread until totally discredited or banned??)or perhaps Carespress on moneysupermarket(where he is banned).
