I'm not a smoker although the way I look at the question is...as smoking is an addiction, are you cutting back on other things in order to carry on smoking or is this the time to try to kick the habit?

My mum is a smoker, and has been for more years than she cares tro admit to...the fact that the cost has gone up to her it just means that she will have to cut back on other things as she's unable/unwilling to give up!

I gave up a while ago, with the odd slip up. Usually when I visit the UK (I have a lot of friends who smoke, and that's when I am weak). But I usually buy a pack here in NL, where it is still only €5.50 (I think) for 20.

I've seen a few friends who said they are now giving up because it's too expensive. But I also saw one acquaintance comment on FB about how annoyed he was about the tax hike, and how he will keep on smoking to 'spite' the taxman. Had to laugh at that. What a fool.

It's down to about 1 in 5 adults smoke nowadays isn't it?

Ive no idea what the official stats are...but I think its a generation thing....there are still a lot of elderly people who smoke because they have always smoked...and for some of them its very hard to give up.

Ex- smoker here, in my case it wasn't money but ill health that forced me to stop. I gave up at the age of 59, 5 years ago this week, when I contracted a lung disease. Would I still be smoking otherwise? I don't like to think so but as you say, it's so hard to stop. I'm sure that I'd not be smoking as much as I did though, don't know how other pensioners can afford it now?!

Smoker here would love to quit, for health and money reasons. I have managed 6 months here and 9 months there type quits but never actually managed to kick the !!!!!!!g things. I always come up with some "excuse" to light up.

if you can find an excuse, you don't want to quit
im an ex smoker, i sat down and worked out how much it cost me over a month, then a year, then compared that to my net income at the time
I dont know how anyone affords it nowdays, I saw that certain brands are now £8 for 20, thats about £250 a month for a 20 a day habit, just short of £3k a year
the ironic thing is, its usually the less well off that do it most
  • Just given up myself after many years and a scary amount of money set alight.

If I am being honest the decision was never ever about the money and I do wonder how much they could have continued to put the price up before the money did start to disturb me.

If they doubled tomorrow I am pretty certain that there would still be lots of people like me who would continue to smoke.

I am glad to have the extra money in my pocket course i am but it was never a motivator for packing it in sadly and I doubt it is for many

I have to admit, its still early days for me and im still at the 'i wish smoking was good for you so i could still do it' stage.

Whenever i go out for a meal with friends, i still always crave a cigarette afterwards, the patches definitely help though.
