My reason for thinking they'd take cash was that, if the company were to go out of business within 24hrs or less (which didn't happen then but maybe soon?) then they'd receive guaranteed payment without me, as a buyer, cancelling the card transaction on account of fraud or whatever reasons I'd want to. (And before any MSE marks 'inform' me that's not possible, then you're not as smart as you think.)

If a transaction is processed properly and the merchants T&C's adhered to, if it's done with a pin it doesn't matter if it's a fraudulent transaction - the retailer still gets their money, and then merchant takes the hit.

"discount for cash" only works for tax avoidance - credit / debit cards have fees, but cash isn't free to process at all (change isn't free, it takes more time to count, needs to be collected, insured etc).

And I wonder why they didn't seem eager to help you...

If you'd done your homework, you'd have seen that was never going to be the case.
Because they went into voluntary administration, they're protected from their creditors for a short amount of time to try and resolve any issues / find a buyer etc - rather like Chapter 11 in the US I suppose, though a much shorter amount of time (10 days I think).
