Game - Praise for Staff Member

Hi All

Now I do like a good moan, but also like to praise people when it's due.

Reading about Game going into administration I went to my local store (won't name it as it will make the employee identifiable and don't want to get her into trouble) to see how much was on a gift card I had and whether I could use my reward points.

She said to use them quickly as they may suspend taking them but "As the tills are still taking them we will".

I did my shopping then when waiting tp pay someone in front asked for a gift card. She told them that the company was having some problems and they would be better off giving the person the cash.

Just wanted to say I thought this was really decent of her :T

Yet in another store... http://twitpic.com/8zok09 ...for those not geekily inclined - they couldn't stock Mass Effect 3 because of the mess they're in and credit lines drying up - so they've put Mass Effect 2 in the number 1 spot with some strategically positioned stickers. It's not my photo but it's doing the rounds quite heavily on the internet - bet it catches a few clueless parents buying games for kids out though!

I think for every single copy to be marked up like that that's a manager taking the proverbial and the staff shouldn't be blamed.

Even if the staff were in on it, if it was potentially your last full weekend in the job with stores in danger of closing forever a week on Saturday with further potential delay before you get your redundancy, I'd find it just as hard to give a toss.

Put it this way it's not in the same league as a holiday firm conning people out of cash up until the day you read in the papers they're in administration.

To be fair - most of the other titles have stickers in the same place, the it's not exactly prices as a new release.

    Hey y'all,
After reading the news about Game and reading the MSE forum on Wednesday 21/3/12, I stopped by one of their stores on the way home from visiting family in the evening.
I go in and there's just one member of counter-staff and the store manager chatting to a couple about non-gaming topics. (Seemed like friends and relatives catching up with each other)
Since the end of last year I've been thinking of getting a Nintendo Wii, solely for the purpose of playing the recently released Legend of Zelda game.
So over the last couple of weeks I've been browsing in Game and noticed they're offering pre-owned Wii consoles for £39.99. That seems quite cheap but looking at the deal on the item card, it included an asterix next to things that aren't available with the item (remember some of those to be the ethernet device/connection and memory?)
Well I'm no expert on the Wii console (see examples above) but I do know that to play LoZ:Skyward Sword game I'd need a controller with Wii Motion Plus. Thinking that I could take advantage of the 'firesale' I thought if I offered them cash for a Wii, controllers with Wii Motion Plus and the LoZ game, that I'd get some discount since they are in trouble and weren't offering warranties.
Well I politely asked if they were willing to offer deals on specific combined items but all I got was corporate speak of how they were secure with no chance of going out of business and how the deals currently on offer were unegotiable.
Well I informed them that, as of that afternoon, the Game company had been suspended from the stock exchange and going into administration. They probably didn't know that, so all I got back was more corporate speak of how they would be ok and that their would be no firesale etc.
Apologies for this long post and I'm aware it doesn't make me sound favourable but that's not all.
While browsing the shelves earlier during my visit, I saw LoZ: Skyward Sword among the preowned games but it was missing the cover and labeled that way. The strange thing was, the game was priced at £24.99 with no cover and £24.99 brand new and with cover! Thinking I could at least get a discount on the game, I pointed out the mistake. All I got back was a refusal for a discount on the game; it's the same price used and without a cover as it is brand new and with a cover.
Maybe it's things like that which make them a bad business?
I was probably too premature in expecting them to be open to offers and turned out to be the bearer of bad news. Was I in the wrong? Not in my opinion. I don't own Game or any retail store my business. If they want the money that I work hard for, then I want to get the best deal I can! Consumers unite!
I don't know if I'll go into the same Game store anytime soon but a week from now what are the chances of them being open to offers?

Unfortunately it'll be because the most sensible place to put the price is in the top right hand corner - it's common in that industry, however i'd also expect people to be capable of understanding that a new release game probably isn't going to be £18.

As for OP, glad you got a good member of staff, the Game staff have been pretty much hung out to dry with a lack of information from the higher ups in the company.
Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.

The future xbox replacement xbox 720 does not come with a disc reader, so games purchases will be via download only. So the future for Game does not look rosy

    BLAH

    So to sum up:

    You went into Game
    You tried to haggle
    They refused
You delighted in telling them the company had gone into admin
    They still refused to haggle

Did you get some sort of kick out of telling a shop worker they have probably lost their job, and with unpaid salary owed too?

Most people that buy games for themselves probably. Not the old dears who are buying them for their kids/grandkids. Also, would you expect an old game to be positioned at No. 1?

So...why do people constantly seem to expect that they deserve a discount for paying in cash? I know credit card companies take a certain percentage of sales, but if credit card company takes say, 3% of a sale, giving someone a discount, even by 3% means that the company makes no more than if you'd paid by card, and I doubt the consumer would really care if it was a 2 or 1% discount.
