Mileage rate- What should I bill a bank for?
Options
Long story but due to the incompetence of the Halifax bank my elderly parents have lost access to their bank account as I have gained Power of Attorney. I am now having to make a 440 mile return trip to give them cash from my account to tie them over as I can't access their account yet.
What mileage rate should I charge the Halifax for taking a 2 litre automatic on such a journey? I will also be seeking compensation for traveling there on a Saturday and returning on a Sunday thus causing me to cancel my weekend plans.

I'd suggest a ballpark figure of £00

Why couldn't you send the money through electronic means? Have you heard of Western Union for example. Why couldn't the bank do that? They have ID they could have gone to the bank to withdraw money. Maybe not on Saturday but Monday would have done. The maximum you could expect is possibly £10 compensation. I'd try for £20 and accept £10.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I'd also suggest you claim for no less than £0
There are other ways to transfer money without having to drive it 440 miles. This is the year 2012.0 -

Need more detail about the issues and what constitutes 'lost access'.0

Refer to the agreement your parents have with the bank regarding the charging of such fees and use that amount stated - no more, no less"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I have a lot of sympathy for OP. We had similar problems with Yorkshire Bank when we took PoA for my late mum some years ago. The problems were impossible to sort out and all the nit-wits at the bank could say was 'we need you to pop in and see an adviser'. Well yes, fine, but we both worked full time and lived at the other end of the country - and this was after we had 'popped in' and the adviser had obviously no idea what a PoA was, or what it was intended to achieve and had promptly 'lost' the paper work. Cue two further visits, all at the expense of work and petrol (and yes we did visit my mum as well, but we'd normally do that at weekends, and meet up with other members of the family).
My advice to OP is to focus on getting the actual problems sorted out and worry about compensation later.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

If you complain you may probably get up to £100 and/or flowers- Most LBG staff can authorise this when a customer expresses a wish to complain. Be calm and friendly and keep a note of any expenses occurred - they will deal with your complaint promptly.0 -
As above there are far simpler methods of giving them money or helping them out, which would make such a claim ridiculous.
Western Union if they need cash. Buy their shopping online and get it delivered - same goes for pretty much any other goods they need. If things are that desperate then why not just get a local friend or neighbour to lend them some cash, whilst you transfer money in to the friends bank account.0 -

Amazingly, Yorkshire Bank do have branches outside of Yorkshire.0
