After reading MSE about the SelfTrade ISA with £50 Amazon vouchers I applied online today. Rejected - 'Name not known'

Why? Then I did MSE's credit checker - Excellent. I'm on the Electoral Register (since 1975 same address!) but I've asked for my name not to be published. Checked via 192.com. Shows me on ER but only 2003-2005.

Does this mean you must NOT ask to have your name kept private if you wish to get a good credit rating?
Well it makes sense to me!

Nope, shouldnt do. I don't know the exact technicality surrounding it- so before you get ready to jump down my throat- back off.. Ben .

It prevents your ER being publicly available from 192 et al. I registered in a new LA registry office at the end of last year (without my details being made available) and it still appears on my credit report and I was accepted for a current account and credit card recently.

I'm not on the edited register which they publish for phone scammers and it isn't an issue. Could there be multiple ways to write your address or name and might confuse their systems?

    In a word, NO.

Credit reference agencies are permitted to buy the full register for the purposes of credit referencing and anti-money laundering (identity) checks.

I do not know what checks Selftrade performed but you are entitled to ask and be informed if a credit reference agency was searched.

Although not a "credit issue" it would be a good idea to check your Equifax and/or Experian credit reports for any obvious problems with your listing affecting your name and address.

There's nothing to beat QED proof :T Thanks. Also for Heloid's reply. My surname is often spelt wrongly - but not by me ;)

EU residents can register to vote in the UK, but can only vote in certain elections. This information does appear on credit reports.

Savings accounts trigger ID checks not credit checks, so it's not about creditworthiness at all.

When these checks are based on your credit report data, which many are these days, they look at how much data you have, whether it's consistent and what sort of data it is. So, for example, having a mortgage registered at your address in your name carries more weight than a mail order account.

It's unusual to be turned away following an unsuccessful electronic ID check. Most providers would simply revert to paper-based proofs.

I am an official company representative of Experian. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"

Some bank staff will turn you away on the slightest pretext. Usually blaming the poor old Data protection act
