pcombo - which basic accounts have you tried for so far? As others have said it might be something as simple as your address format not matching your electoral roll entry (are you on the electoral roll) and so you can't be ID'd electronically. When applying for a bank account - have you told them it's a BASIC account you are after.

Are you on the Electoral Roll?

Most financial institutions do a basic check against the Electoral Roll on whether the name and address exist.

You are legally obliged to register on the Electoral Roll.

Not registering can have all sorts of dire consequences, such as not being able to even open a savings account.

The electoral roll and CT systems are different (although not in a way that many would realise).

If you’ve been in the UK for under 5 years, for example, you can’t vote, yet you can register for CT. It’s complicated, but that’s the bottom line of it.

I managed (somehow) to get credit when I was about 19 at an address I was living in, but not on the ER for.

    Why is it?

It's illegal not to complete a form, if you receive one addressed to you.

It's also illegal to provide false information on a form, if the person you are living with receives a form and doesn't enter your name on it.

Both the above are punishable by a fine of up to £1,000, and are taken from...

Disclaimer: There are certain situations where you may opt for anonymous registration, but I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

    Where's your information from?

OK, I should have said "You are legally obliged to register on the Electoral Roll if you get sent the form. If you don't get sent the form, whoever does receive it at your permanent address must list you"

Anyway - - this isn't a debate about whether it is illegal or not if you don't register.

The FACTS are that if you do not appear on the ER, you may get declined for all sorts of applications, such as savings accounts. Not being on the ER can/will also negatively affect your overall Credit Rating.

    Just trying to be helpful.

  • It sounds like you are failing anti money laundering checks which exist simply to prove you are who you say you are and are saving in line with hmrc requirements. Quite simply it means something in your most basic proof of id is wrong. With ccjs you're still able to open a basic bank account. Everyone should be able to get into the banking system.

Something is wrong on your aml check. It can be silly things like flat position in a new build or you sending a mail order package to another address historically.

This is false. I vote when I was in the UK for only 2 years and I enrolled to vote in the first few weeks of arriving.

After reading MSE about the SelfTrade ISA with £50 Amazon vouchers I applied online today. Rejected - 'Name not known'

Why? Then I did MSE's credit checker - Excellent. I'm on the Electoral Register (since 1975 same address!) but I've asked for my name not to be published. Checked via 192.com. Shows me on ER but only 2003-2005.

Does this mean you must NOT ask to have your name kept private if you wish to get a good credit rating?
