Anyway I'm the OP and I've had a reply from the Post Office, who were forwarded the letter I sent to Royal Mail.
In their reply they admitted the assistant in my local post office was wrong and should have supplied proof of posting, not just a receipt. They went on to say she no longer works there. As compensation I received a book of 12 1st Class stamps.0 -
I've recently posted some items with POP (returns for online purchases) and the new POP seems to be a system where the address details are entered into the RM system which generates a barcode, this is printed and put on the posted item and the receipt you are given has a tracking number - seems to be a bit like Recorded Delivery but no POD Signature required.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I thought they had got rid of these - i'd be careful as to whether they are still valid or not (although probably no point asking in the PO judging by the duff information given there ).0 -
if i post cds in a normal post box (with a large letter stamp on) and one goes missing i fill in a claim form with royal mail. i mark that i have no proof of postage on the form.
never had a problem claiming - Proof of posting is a waste of time. you don't have to have it to claim from RM. maximum you can claim in my experience with or without POP is £46. (i note what the rules say)
if you're worried - send it recorded. if it's valuable send it special. if you want POP print it out from RM site and get it ready before you go PO and get them to stamp it. Save us waiting0 -

They are still available in pads if you phone RM and ask, suggestions that they are invalid are just rumours and they are still being produced. I have several pads here ordered from RM recently and now unused as I use the bulk online form and print it out instead.if i post cds in a normal post box (with a large letter stamp on) and one goes missing i fill in a claim form with royal mail. i mark that i have no proof of postage on the form.

You have been exceptionally lucky if you have received compensation for anything without proof of postage- the claim forms specifically ask that proof of postage (as well as value etc) be attached otherwise claim is invalid. I would certainly caution anyone on here thinking about sending things to get proof of postage, or else face the fact that if lost you have no real way to get a cheque back for your loss.
Incidentally, recorded is just basic postage and rarely tracks, so if you are wanting recorded purely as proof of postage it is worthless- might as well get a free POP.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
