Meantime, Quentin, are you still learning?

I don't know lisyloo, but I have seen enough her posts to know she knows her stuff ........

Don't quite follow what you are up to here......

You actually came into this thread to have a disagreement with lisyloo, not me!
    I disagree lisyloo........

Then after she thanked your posts having a go at me (she has previously stated somewhat childishly she doesn't "like" me) it seems you are actually a bit of a disciple of hers!

Then you trained your sights on me. (Patronisingly telling us how clever you and lisyloo are, being both able to "understand insurance principles" - whatever that is supposed to mean!)

I think you are overly complicating things. It defines who 'you' are and says if 'you' have to cancel 'your' trip. A policy doesn't have to exclude something - it can cover something and in that wording it covers 'you' and not the girlfriend. I have hung my hat on cancellation cover because that is what is in question here.

Definitions of close relative and business associate are irrelevant. I didn't say a travelling companion has to be named - I said any person wanting the benefit of the policy has to be named.

It wasn't my definition of 'you' - I took it from the policy.

I have not mentioned that everyone has to be named - only those that want to benefit.

PS the excess is applied before the limit, not after - in my mind.

Are you saying that a £500 limit would never be paid out?

    Anyway doesn't matter now :)

Yes, but I was trying to make the point that you might like to make sure you are covered properly for next time :-)

I completely understand the differences between the definitions. The op described a situation that I would say would trigger cover. I read it that only the costs relating to his part of the booking would be covered.

Regarding the rest of your post, this is a discussion board not a lecture. Can't say I read it all but in the uk, an excess would be regarded as self-insurance rather than coinsurance.

The po policy could be a test for contra proferentum - I would expect to receive the limit stated.
  • I would disagree on your excess point above. Though it does say the maxmimum you can claim is £500 and the excess is the first part of any claim I would argue that:
    a. By using the words we will pay up to £500 in the policy wording indicates they are willing to pay up to £500 after any excess.
    b. they use the term excess. Not deductible, not retention. Though my experience in insurance is commercial and I appreciate they may use excess in personal lines as that is what people understand, if they want to apply a deductible they should say so!

I would also say I agree that the OP should be able to claim the whole cost on his policy. the cover states 'which you have paid or contracted to pay'. He was taking a trip, it has been cancelled for a valid reasons and these all sums he has paid or is contracted to be paid, what they are specfically paying for is to a certain extent beside the point as long as they were for the trip.

Other than that £500 is a mean cancellation limit!

I was laying out my reasoning in case other readers found it useful or wanted to discuss it in detail.

    Thanks it's very useful.
