Travel Insurance can I claim

Hi

I am due to go to Paris tomorrow with my gf for the weekend but she is ill :( and may well not be able to go (she is seeing her Dr again this morning)

I booked the trip and paid for it but both names are on the hotel/flight (flights = flybe operated by Air France & hotel = Novotel booked through last minute.com). I checked on the websites and the flights won't be refunded if we cancel and the hotel/last minute charges 2 nights stay for a cancellation which is the whole trip for us.

I have worldwide multi-trip travel insurance with my bank account (Halfax Ultimate Reward) it doens not cover my gf as we don't live together but I think she has her own travel insurance.

My question is will the Halifax refund the holiday if we have to cancel (obviously I'll tell her to get a Drs note as evidence) or would they not cover it as it's her that's sick, not me?

Thanks in Advance

The Halifax won't cover any of your gf's costs.

You need to read the policy and see whether or not you are covered as a result of her illness, and if so contact them to make a claim for your losses.

You need to check your policy, but you may be covered if a travelling companion is sick.
But you will need to claim on yours and she will need to claim on hers.

......At the moment it sounds like the costs were all borne by the OP so it is his insurance policy that I would look first to pay for the entire cancellation.

If he has good cover wide enough to cover the cancellation due to sickness of his "travelling companion" then that may be as far as the OP needs to look. The best policies do not require the travelling companion to be an "insured person".......

    No!!

Travel insurance covers the policyholder, and any other named members of the family/group on the policy.

You cannot book a group holiday and expect your insurer to refund the full cost of the trip if an uninsured member of the group drops out of the trip!

Mine covers "accompanying partners travelling with the knowledge and consent of the Policyholder".

So I guess it's back to - read the policy.

Why not telephone the insurance company?

As I posted - unless named on the policy, your party members won't be covered!

Your policy covers you and your "partners"!

In post #5 you posted "named members".
This contradicts my policy (that I've quoted directly from) which covers partners who are not named.

So if your party member is a partner then they ARE covered in some cases contrary to your statement that only named people are covered.

I would assume a gf sharing the same room is considered a partner but that definition would need to be checked.

I agree its time to read your policy documents or ring the insurer's to check. I would imagine though that you have to claim separately on your individual policies. Its possible you may not be covered unless your policy stipulates cover for an accompanying traveller - it should say something like they will pay "thru your inability to travel due to death, illness, injury of you or a friend/close relative with whom you are travelling". Your gf may be covered under medical on her own policy anyway providing it was not a pre-existing medical condition. In any case, its up to the insurance company to look at it and decide. Freebie insurance policies provided with a bank account often exclude almost everything.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

But the gf didn't buy a holiday and has in fact no contract for a holiday, so she has nothing to insure.
