Quentin, perhaps you will now convince us that you know one iota about that which you have spouted so spectacularly?

Are you capable of drafting a sound insurance policy wording which would stand the test of argument within the UK insurance industry?

    I am.

    What's wrong?

I pointed out that unless the parties are named on a policy, they won't be covered!

Lisyloo has her "partners" named on the policy (albeit as "partners" - though I doubt it will cover more than one - unless it is a business travel policy, and actually covers "business partners"!

    No they are not named.
Just for clarity my understanding of "named" is e.g. "Mr John Smith" i.e. a specific person.

Why would you used the word "named" when you actually mean "covered".
The reason is that you were wrong and now won't admit it and are squirming on the definition of "named" which is extremely clear.
  • Hi thanks for all the helpful replies, gf has now seen the doc again and feeling much better so the trip is back on :j :D

BTW as it seems to have generated some discusion I did check with Halifax and my policy can cover a wife or cohabiting partner and children. But in my case doesn't cover my gf as we don't live together They would have covered my costs on production of gf's doctor's notes they said gf would have to use her policy and claim her costs separately

    You are so right.

I'm squirming under your barrage. It's lovely!

I seemingly have upset you again by using the word "named" instead of "noted". Sorry marm.

I am not at all upset why would I be?
The word "named members" has a very clear and explicit meaning.
If someone is named on a policy then their name is on it - doh.
I don't think you slipped up with your wording.
I think you were wrong and won't admit it, but that doesn't upset me it makes me feel sorry for you.

I made a mistake in post #3 but I'm happy to admit and learn and become a more knowledgeable person as a result.
I feel pity for you not upset.

    Great news.
I've had two simialar experiences this year and it's quite stressful trying to plan to be away (packing/ironing) whilst at the same time planninfg in your mind for cancellation.
The first case for me was a funeral the second was illness.
Like you both times the holiday went ahead.
hey said gf would have to use her policy and claim her costs separately

Unfortunately your gf doesn't have any costs as you said in the initial post that you paid. That's something worth investigating and considering for next time and I think you could have been out of pocket in this case for half the costs.

I am sure Quentin you have learned from this thread?.....

    Yes.

    eg: Twaddle like this....
there are people like lisyloo and myself who have been beyond selling and we know how these contracts are structured from first principles. We are able to interpret complex policy wordings.

We are so lucky to have these contributions from you and lisyloo.

Yes that's exactly where I was this morning half planning for packing and geting to airport tomorrow etc and half planning to cancel and if/how I'd get money back

My conversation with Halifax was only ever "What if we have to cancel" but from what the lady said it seemed I could claim back my airfare and the hotel - my costs cos I'm covered against having to cancel because of illness to other party travelling (even though she not covered on the policy) but gf's air fair wasn't covered. But as you say I paid everything (it's my treat for her birthday) so technically her costs are nil so her insurance might not have refunded her.

    Anyway doesn't matter now :)

Whoever paid can claim under their own policy if their policy has high enough limits to cover the whole sum that they were legally still obliged to pay despite the cancellation. They have the insurable interest allowing them to insure all that they paid for. If travelling companions did not pay or moreover were never expected to pay, then there is nothing I have seen in a policy wording which would prevent the one who was legally obliged to pay making a claim for the cost of the whole group.

    ........

If one paid for all, then he claims.
So, in short, are you saying the OP could have claimed the full cost?

My view is that there is no single answer as there are a huge multitude of wordings out there.

Observations looking at the PO policy (as its easy to find) tells me that the definition of ‘You’ is Any insured person whose name appears on the policy schedule.

Cancellation cover is - We will pay you up to £500 for unused travel and accommodation charges (including unused kennel and cattery expenses up to £250) which are not recoverable elsewhere and which you have paid or contracted to pay should you have to cancel your trip before you leave your home or place of business as a result of the following commencing during the period of insurance:
    (a) Your death, injury or illness or that of your travelling companion

So, in short, I don't think the OP's girlfriends costs would be covered as she was not named.

Did the OP suffer a loss in respect of her share?

Someone can acquire insurable interest in something that is given as a gift. Maybe the insurable interest in her share was hers effectively as soon as it was booked. If she had her own insurance could she have claimed. The PO cancellation talks about money you have paid. Does that mean that you could not insure the cancellation costs if someone gave you a holiday? Yes, someone has suffered a loss but that doesn't mean a particular insurer with a particular wording would cover it.

I don't know and I'm not afraid to admit it.
