Which would you sacrifice? Location or size?

Looking at moving. Can't afford the size house I desire in a location I want. Which would you rather sacrifice? A smaller house in the location you want? Or the space you want in a less desirable area?

I'd sacrifice size over location, so long as I wasn't moving into a shed. But then again, it depends on the reason for the location, and the distance to a better sized flat. If you've got two equally good houses that only differ in those two criteria, take size and location out of it and see which one you prefer.

As long as it wasn't into a grotty area, I'd go for size every time. As far as I'm concerned having too much space is always preferable to not having enough.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Is it just you? If so, I would say location over size. If you live with other people, e.g. partner / children then I would say size over location.

A few more details... I live with my Husband and my two stepchildren stay over two nights every week. I have a 3 bed house, 2 decent sized rooms one smaller. Small front yard, medium garden. No drive or garage. I don't know how to say this without offending some but if it does I'm sorry, it's an ex council house, I bought it to get on the ladder, but the people around here are not very nice. It's also not close to any imenities. No shops or pub or anything around me.

Speaking from experience of buying a house based upon its size and style in the past and making a huge mistake, I'd choose location over size everytime.

We downsized from a very large house but still needed plenty of space and wanted to be mortgage-free so we chose to buy a lovely period house that was about half the size of the house we sold......but in an area we hadn't bothered to investigate, didn't know at all and where properties were much much cheaper........HUGE MISTAKE

The area turned out to be pants......lots of crime, undesirable neighbours and very deprived.......we hated living here with a vengeance and were only really happy within our own four walls......in fact in the three years we live there I only went out on foot on my own around six times for fear I'd be mugged!

Luckily when we sold up last year we were fortunate enough to manage to find a larger house in a much nicer location for a similar price, but despite it working out well in the end I would never choose size over location again ;)
    Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

What they said. I can live without storing a tonne of "stuff" ....... however I don't want to live in a rough area, or on a busy road, or with a north facing back garden.
I've got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Adages such as Location, Location, Location do not come about by chance.

Brilliant thanks guys. I was hoping to get a four bed as we might be planning a baby soon and stepchildren are a 9 year old boy and a seven year old girl. They each have their own room and I was worried about putting them in the big room (depending on sex) with a baby or toddler. Even though they only stay 2 nights a week they are still part of family and didn't want them to feel pushed out.
Something has to be sacrifced! Grrr!
