Just a point - debts/as well as assetts, are taken into account at the time of separation so if at that point you have a record of what was owed it will be very useful (as long as he accepts that they were debts IYSWIM) so you will continue to pay them because of the penalties - so at separation debt might have been £10K; at time of FDR (Financial disputes resolution)
they might be £2k - (for example) - but the liabilites WERE £10K so that's the figure that should be taken into account

it will reduce the total assets pot

    like this

    assetts (house) 100000
debt (unsecured) 10000 (at time of split) or 2000 (at time of FDR)
    nett assetts 90000 or 98000
    50/50 split 45000 each or 49000 each

that's put VERY crudely -the idea is so make the total assetts as low as possible; if you've paid off some debt it needs to be taken into account...
Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY

Basically at the moment I tallied the debts and gave him half to pay off... I thought that fair enough!

In order to clear this by the end of next year I need to be paying off around £300 a month.. which will cover interest etc.. on top of the regular bills etc.. so it may be a very tight year at my house!.. thankfully I have already decided what half the children are getting for christmas next year so can look for bargains throughout the year as usual.. :D

Is DS2 at secondary school? Have you ever looked into whether your council offer free bus passes even if you live less than 3 miles away for anyone entitled to free school dinners,my council does.
