It may seem extortionate, but don't forget that includes the cost of [STRIKE] subsidising the teachers in attendence [/STRIKE] ensuring you children are "supervised" during the trip.

You can the teachers room and board, or you can pay the supervisors room, board and wages.....

Just wait till you get to the final year "Prom" that has become the thing in recent years - That IME requires the biggest splash of cash of the entire school career!

    Only if you let it.

My son hired a complete outfit from Debenhams at student rates, and looked incredibly smart.Contribution towards limo was £20.

Daughter's prom coming up, bought dress from TK Max in sale(£38.00) and it is stunning.I out and out refused to pay £100s
on a dress( that looks like one of those doll toilet roll holders)for a couple of hours like some of the parents are doing, and like my daughter wanted me to!

My son is in Reception, and in the first term it cost @ £115 in 'asks'. That's non uniform day, designing and buying Christmas cards, school photos, sponsorship, harvest festival, nativity play tickets etc and not including milk money, school dinners or uniform.

And probably, apart from uniform, all optional. I'm not trying to be harsh (I've been there), just saying that you don't have to pay for all these things. The child designed Christmas cards and school photos are lovely but not mandatory.

Your son's in reception and you're already shocked at what you've had to shell out for. I'd really like to say it gets cheaper over the forthcoming 11-13 years but...;)

However, I'm all in favour of a strict uniform policy so think the extra amount is worth it.

Just curious, but why? I see no good reason to keep school uniforms.

I'm a bit shocked at this post. :(

The first three things that I have highlighted are basically expenses involved with childcare and food for YOUR child. ;)

And regarding the school placing demands on your time.... Er, yes, again, they are YOUR children and if you want thyem to benefit from extra curricular activities you should be prepared to donate time and money wherever possible.

Schools are being very hard hit by these financial times. Councils are squeezing their budgets and equipment is getting more and more expensive.

I'm not speaking as a teacher btw but a parent who is asked to give as much as the rest of you but sees it as necessary and beneficial to my children. :)

Yes, I agree they are, but then so are many parents.

Everything costs more. The weekly shop, heating, fuel, etc etc and yet incomes are not rising. For some of us it just means cutting back on other things but for others on a limited income it may mean not being able to pay at all.

My bug bear and I have said this before on MSE is that basic education should not cost any extra and I feel it is wrong to charge for anything to do with the curriculum, and some children may lose out because parents cannot afford/do not want to pay etc.

IMO education should be a top priority.Money spent in this area is money saved in others long term.

Oooh, I love a debate, however, feel it may detract from the real point of the thread so I'll leave it short.

If pupils all wear the same then there's no chance of competition, i.e, who has the latest Voi jeans, RL shirt, Hollister hoodie. If puplis could wear what they wanted it would create a real have/have not atmosphere. There's more to it than just that but it forms part of my opinion.

Coming back to the expense of school things, I always refused to pay for the school class photo as I always said to my DS and DD I only want photos of them on the wall not other peoples kids (no offence :)).

Anyway, DS left primary last year and was presented with a year book (which, yes, we did have to contribute to) and there, at the back of the book, was every class photo from reception to Year 5. Made me so happy I didn't fork out in the first place!

yes I'd pay for an end-of school year book too - I've still got mine from high school, its brilliant (not the best-made item ever, done on school property with school materials and we did have to pay for them, but its a lovely condensed reminder of my school days).

The school uniform debate is a great one to get your teeth stuck into - euronorris another thread maybe :)?

My daughter is in year 4 and tomorrow will be her third non uniform day in March alone, we have also had cake sales, we parents provide them and then buy them all back, i think it would be more convenient to have my wages paid directly to the school account.....;)
