Applying for jobs your not qualified for?

Is this a waste of time, I am fed up sitting back doing nothing and by the looks of it nothing I am actually qualified to do is gonna come my way, I see a lot of employers now just asking for a degree for the sake of it really for very basic jobs. Is it worth applying for these?

Does the degree make people more qualified to do these 'basic jobs'? I doubt it. It's maybe because they want someone with a good academic background.
I would apply if it said desirable but not if it said you had to have one. If that is one of the criteria they will just not look at the CV.0 -
If it's a secretarial job asking for a degree, I still apply - I am probably more qualified to do that actual role from my background and experience anyway than a grad with little sec experience.0

I often apply to companies when they advertise for something i cannot do or even hope to do, but it's more like a speculative approach for any other vacancies which may arise in the future.
I find myself looking back to when i first left school for things i did in my first job and find the skills i had then actually need to be licensed these days.
I doubt any of the jobs i apply for would ever ask for a degree but they do ask for CRB's and i never apply to work with children or vulnerable people.0 -
It most certainly is - the job I'm in atm asked for a degree but I have an HND and explained all my relevant experience in a cover letter.

I guess you could get away with it if you can sell yourself.
I once had an interview for a dream job, found it through the job centre, I made the interview, went in and they asked "So tell me about your education," and went on to ask for a load of qualifications I didn't have, turned out the job centre failed to add these to the requirements, rather than sell myself I explained the situation and was rather embarrassed, apologised for wasting there time and went out with my tail between my legs. Looking back they must of saw something on my CV they liked or I wouldn't of made the interview stage, either that or they didn't get many applicants.0 -
