Applying for jobs your not qualified for?

I often apply to companies when they advertise for something i cannot do or even hope to do, but it's more like a speculative approach for any other vacancies which may arise in the future.
Now if you did that in replying for one of my vacancies it would backfire.
As soon as I'd read enough to realise that you were wasting my time in applying, the CV would go on the reject pile and you would not be considered a serious candidate now or in the future.0 -
At many companies the person with the job has to go via some hiring manager, who then goes through some preferred agency, and at each step things can get 'confused'. The actual original person may not give two hoots for a degree, but someone in HR thought it should be on all job specs, or the agent recycled an old job ad!
I would say if you fit the job in every respect except maybe having a degree, apply! If however they want an accountant and you can't count, save your own time ;-)0 -

Remind me not to apply for a job with you then......You could end up rejecting someone who would be prefect for another role.
I applied for a job where I had none of the required experience I didn't get that job but they interviewed me for another temp role. If a job is a little out of my league I might take a chance as they may like someone with ambition to up their game.0 -

Yes but i say in the opening of my cover letter that i have no experience and it does say in the subject header for the application speculative application so wouldn't be wasting your time. I send more email applications rather than the written variety these days.0 -
If it's a secretarial job asking for a degree, I still apply - I am probably more qualified to do that actual role from my background and experience anyway than a grad with little sec experience.
Have you noticed most secretary jobs say it's suitable for school leavers? It's a tacky way to discriminate on age.0 -

I applied for a job where as far as I was concerned I met all the criteria but was turned down even though I told her I could do all that was on the job spec. The agency said she had 'many' applicants that met it like for like. Yet only 3 weeks later she was emailing me saying she had found my CV online and was I interested in the job detailed in the email. I thought hang on a minute isn't that they one she truned me down for. LOL Erm no thanks!
In other words there's no jobs and they just want you to register with their branch.0 -

With school leavers getting severely squeezed out of the labour market by much more qualified and expereinced candidates, I am very happy to see that some employers are looking very positively about employing school leavers.0
