    Today I got 4 pairs of knitting needles (sizes 5.5, 7, 8, 9) for £2 for DDs which I'm told is a good price, I wouldn't have a clue :)

I seem to remember on one of the 'make do and mend' type programmes they made a cake stand from a candlestick (glass or china) and a couple of plates. Basically you glue a plate to each end of the candlestick.... you could even make a 3 tiered one with 2 candlesticks/3 plates. Never done it myself although it's on my 'to do' list one day....

Hope you understand what I mean?!!

there's a video showing how to here http://www.ehow.com/video_12221956_diy-cake-stand-made-paint-candle-holders-vases-plates.html

Thanks Loopychriss I am making one like that for a friends birthday, I need one large plate for MIL but I could apply same principle... Good idea.

Valentina, I can't get that link to take me anywhere, but that might be cos I'm being a silly newbie, or because I still can't quite work the OH's new iPad (birthday present from all of family plus money made from boot sale and music magpie... Keeping it frugal...though brilliant buy, if only cos I can now lie in bed enjoying the forums!)??!!!

Thanks everyone for all your advice and tips, I've only just got into this forum thing and already it is brilliant and everyone really nice...

    Ah, therein lies a tale...

Our son married in February in a very hot, humid country. In the "run up" to the wedding I thought "how on earth am I going to find summer clothing in rainy old Britain in January without it costing me the earth?" I trawled TK Maxx and the Sales and found a few suitable items and had to be content.

The day before flying off, I went to the local charity shop to pick up one or two books for the two weeks away. I noticed a lovely crushed raspberry strappy top with teal and raspberry over-smock (unworn M&S still sporting original tags) for £3, a lovely black silk top as fine as gossamer for £2 (IIRC) and a Berkertex suede leather jacket (£8). As I write, I'm wearing the raspberry set with the jacket beside me ready for action. (It was also worn to leave the UK and return to it as it is quite warm.)

And I got my books (which I left in the hotel room's recycling bin - hoping someone else will benefit from them) and the wedding was truly marvelous...

Hi- what is IIRC- not heard of this? Well done with your finds!
