Probably going to get flamed but never mind! I think some have been harsh on the OP, from what I can gather he is concerned how his Mum will manage with the bills when he leaves home and his siblings follow. I assume (maybe wrongly) that when Dad was alive 6 months ago they use to pay a set amount for board (not that unusual for adult children still living at home). Now Mum is alone and struggling, they are now splitting the bills equally between themselves.

From experience bills aren't that much cheaper for a single person living alone than a few living together. The house still needs to be heated, yes there aren't as many showers so not as much electricity being used. Single living is flippin tough which I know through experience.

Not sure what the answer will be when you all leave home. I think without a mortgage it would be possible to live a frugal live on what income your Mum has coming in.

Also what about this caravan? Is it yours or your Mums? Could this be sold when you leave, maybe raise a bit of cash.

Yes, that's a kindlier interpretation. However, I've never really understood the exact income in benefits and pension that the OPs mum gets, I know it's DLA (but not if its care and mobility, or just one, plus whether it is low, medium or high) and incapacity benefit, that it's approximately 8k.

If so, when they all leave home, I think she would have a budget of around £153 - 165 a week based on the general info supplied (OP needs to confirm, I've judged this to be a net figure of 8k or 8.6k which has also been mentioned rather than gross) with no council tax or mortgage to pay. This is more than twice the rate of someone on JSA and around 20% less than someone working full time on the NMW.

Obviously we don't know the expense of her medical/care needs, if she qualifies for a carer to look after her.

But the OP and his mum can draw up a budget using the MSE budget planner on a future scenario when her kids aren't subsidising the household bills. Perhaps that would give her some assurance. He can also double check if she's due any more benefits on the Turn2us online benefit calculator (none that I can think of though).

Hopefully the OPs mum isn't plagued by any debts as this is often a major cause of struggling with money through having to service them.

And I thought the OP was a genius with money.

Just read some of the many threads on the Banking and Savings sections on here by him.

    Enjoy.
