Ilkley sounds just the job.Small enough to be nice.Decent schools and direct train links to Leeds and Bradford town centre's0

It has to be Northumberland for me. A rural retreat that is only 3 hours or so from Kings Cross yet:
- The best beaches in the country
- Skies free of light pollution
- The beauty of the Northumberland National Park
- Friendly locals who talk to you
- Relatively low property prices
- Traffic free roads
- Great schools
The best placed I lived in by farI don't like getting old, but its better than the alternative!0 -

somewhere between Lands End and John O Groats should doNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

God's own country
Surrey.0 -
I think somewhere on the coast of Kent, Whitstable, Deal, Broadstairs etc. Lovely part of England.0

Chester. It's like Oxford but better and Cheaper. London 2 hours on the train. Liverpool and Manchester close by. Snowdonia and Lake District 90 minutes drive away.0

Don't forget about transport costs. It is better to be within walking/cycling distance of shops, work etc.
We came back to the UK when we retired a few years ago and due to housing costs opted for North Lincolnshire. No regrets and they have made us southerners feel very welcome.
As you are going to rent you could easily move on if you decide the place is not to your liking. Do you have any family or friends you will want to visit? If so look at public transport links, we find the Cross country service from Scotland to Cornwall very convenient.0
