Where are some nice places to live in the UK?

I'm looking for some inspirational help for nice places to live in the UK as I am currently going through a divorce and have the opportunity to live anywhere I want in the UK.

I grew up in London, Essex and Hertfordshire areas, I'd prefer Hertfordshire to any of those, but I am looking to live up north.

I have also lived in Birmingham and Northern Ireland. These also do not suite.

I am thinking Yorkshire or Edinburgh, but does anyone know the housing situation there with council houses and/or housing associations? I would think they do not have council houses in Yorkshire villages, but I can be wrong.

It would help me a lot by listing some places that you have lived or would like to live, it would be much appreciated, thank you.

Edit:
I have worked with Young People my own age in housing difficulties and I have lived in housing association properties and council houses since I was 16. I am fully aware of the situation Britain faces; 5 million homeless. I am fully aware of the waiting list.

I know I will have to wait my turn, there is a woman on this camp (army barracks), who is now divorced and has been here for a year, waiting to be housed. But her situation is much calmer than my own.

I am sorry to sound arrogant in my first post, but I have got a lot of negative and depressing feedback from other web sites; people jumping to the assumption that I will not be housed and that I am not entitled to council housing or housing association properties. I have a housing certificate in front of me, courtesy from the British Army.

    Hi,
You haven't said if there are any other considerations eg need for employment opportunities, size of town preferred etc but
places I would consider if I were in your shoes:
    Kendal, Skipton, Harrogate (posh).
Good luck searching, sounds like fun.

Just read your edit so I see there is more to the question than I originally thought.

Thank you for suggesting and giving me ideas on what I should be looking for (employment opportunities, town size etc).

I am a stay at home mother of 1, now single. I do not wish to go on benefits if I can help it. I am currently studying a part time Open University course in Psychology. I also make a small living on eBay, selling personalised crafted gifts. So maybe some youth centres and charity shops and organisations where I can look into volunteering and hopefully one day get a job.

I'd be looking for a medium sized community with plenty of events. I am a city girl, but I prefer to get to know my neighbours.

Somewhere with shops, restaurants, possibly offices as I have worked in these types of environments before. Also preferably with a cinema and transport links.

This question is so wide it is difficult to answer.

Most people are drawn to the place they life because they have

    Family
    Friends
    Work
    Hobbies
    Voluntary work
    Roots
    Potential education
    Need for solitude
    Transport links
    Health issues
    Financial constrains
Children need to see their father

    And many more

You are giving nothing away to suggest you have any links at all, is this right, you have no family or friends you wish to be near?

if this is right then I think you need to go and visit some places. What do you plan to do with your degree?

Look for somewhere that has good employment prospects and google housing waiting lists to see where your potential for future housing looks brightest.

Sorry I can be of much help but to give the whole of the UK as a starting point makes it too difficult.

somewhere on the outskirts of Leeds, like Yeadon, Horsforth and the like. Some areas are really nice and even though it is student capital in the area there are plenty of non-student properties and it accomodates both

    Glasgow.

It doesn't suffer from the influx of tourists like Edinburgh, has better shopping facilities and an equally good arts infrastructure than its East coast rival.

Lots of strong transport links across the city. It's a very compact city with a lot of parks.

Much cheaper housing and more social housing stock than Edinburgh - have a look at the GHA (Glasgow Housing Association) website for an idea of the stock.

Despite your declaration that you will be housed as a priority, how does this work when you apply for new areas? Do you need to show that you have a local connection or is this waived for armed forces families? I note on the GHA website that those leaving the armed forces are awarded 300 points - three times higher than those with a social need for rehousing and six times greater than those with medical needs.

My other vote would be Brighton and Hove, so long as you're not going to end up in the horrible peripheral estates a few miles out of town which have very bad reputations. My cousin is also raving about Hastings but I can't tell you anything about it.

I'd say Otley. Nice area, near by train station with a 20min journey to leeds.

Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

I vote Northumberland, the forgotten county between England and Scotland :D You've got Newcastle nearby to the south if you want to visit a city, and beautiful countryside to the north, kielder national park, coastline, etc. Good craft scene in Newcastle with lots of craft groups etc, and plenty of charities to volunteer with. Not far to drive into Scotland to visit Edinburgh etc! I hear the Hexham area is nice if you want to be within a train journey of newcastle, or if you want to go further north there's Alnwick and Morpeth!

A lot of former South Africans choose to live here (West Oxfordshire) because it is very safe and not too far from anywhere in the South. I wouldn't really want to live anywhere else despite the MP. :rotfl:
