But he isn't attempting to vary the draw of any one appliance. All he is doing is making sure that no expensive daytime power is imported, so if that only requires a simple circuit then that is an advantage.
I agree that the simple circuit is only attempting to use the excess generated power, but I can not see how the circuit will cope when there is an increase in the base load above normal so that the total load (including the heater) causes the import meter to indicate an import but, on turning off the heater load causes the import meter to show no import. The heater load will cycle on and off at a rate set by the time constants of the circuitry - as explained in my previous post #59.

how it works is you are both right but when you are exporting more than your heater plus background use say 1kw heater plus 500w background use the heater turns on when a cloud comes over the heater turns off or if the pv is producing 1.5kw plus then your background usage goes up say u turn on a kettle the heater goes off to stop you using importes leccy so saving you money
to stop it cycling all the time one of the boards has a delay on it.
yes there are a short time it will cycle thats why it connected to a S.S.R
ive installed my system in november and had no problems at all everything works fine
i read my import meter in the morning and again at tea time
and the reading is the same plus ive got a nice worm bathroom and a watertank 300lts at 70*c plus every day this week
ive got my system set up so it turns on the heated towel rail first in the bathroom then the water heater
yes you can buy other devices (EMMER) etc current switches
at a big price but for £15 this way you can have device DIY
you dont need to run long wires you can do this via remote control for an extra £16 ish
ive done it and it works well
so if you want to do it why not give it a try

I was intending to set a sytem up using the MFR on my sb 4000TL, however the explanations of your system make more sense. Could you please send details. Also do you know of a supplier of reasonably priced 1kw or even better a manually switchable 1kw / 3kw element ??
