I don't think it's anything to do with the charger.

If you move the lid between half-open and fully open and the display flickers or goes off completely (albeit momentarily) then it's going to be either the inverter or the ribbon cable to the LCD display.
How do I add a signature?

I had a similar problem with my Acer Aspire 5920. A friend did the following (I'm a technophobe):
    Control panel/Power options/Edit plan settings
and then set the Turn off display and Put computer to sleep as NEVER.
Seems to have worked for me as the screen hasn't gone black since doing this.

Thank you for the suggestion, I have applied the settings.

It seems like when it does load, it only loads until before the login page. When the login page is up (which I don't see), the screen turns off.

Did you get the screen flickering at too?

So here is an update which I need help with.

The above suggestion either worked or it helped until yesterday. I took off sleep and then every time I turned on my laptop it worked as normal, no problem with having to restart it many times.

Then yesterday I went to turn the laptop on and nothing.

Today I decided to turn it on after not wanting to yesterday, and at times the Acer screen right at the beginning comes up, but most of the time it doesn't. However, if I use my phone light and shine it onto the screen, I can see my laptop screen. I have to put it on the highest setting on the torch otherwise it is too faint, and even then it is still difficult to see.

I decided to connect my laptop to a external monitor and this is how I a typing on my laptop. When I pressed Fn+F5 to connect the external monitor to the laptop, the laptop screen actually showed up in full colour, before flicking off and then showing up on the external monitor.

A option came up to show the screen on both monitors, which I selected, but it only shows up on the external monitor, and on the laptop once again it ids very faint (can't see it) unless I flash my phone light on it I can see the screen is on the laptop.

If anyone knows what the problem is after this description, please let me know. If I can continue using it even with an external monitor I will. If it is cheap to fix I will. If not at least I know what to do with the laptop next.

This is funny, I went to turn off the external monitor option then this laptop screen was nice and bright showing the screen as normal. Then it turned off, then off, then on, then off. So I went to select the external monitor option again and how funny, after randomly pressing the Fn button, the screen is showing perfectly both on the laptop and external monitor. I don't know what is happening there! It's nice to see my normal laptop screen again (and the external monitor).

I have now disconnected the external monitor from my laptop by taking the plug out, and the laptop screen is on as normal! Not sure how long for though.

I spoke too soon. I went to move the laptop by the screen slightly and it turned off, so back to the external monitor.

Hi mandi, is there a certain way of doing this?

When my laptop was being confusing, I did try that a few times. Should I take it out whilst the charger is plugged in?

As an update to the previous posts, I connected the laptop to the external monitor to be able to shut down the laptop as I can't see the laptop screen properly. I then disconnected the external monitor when the laptop was off and took it to my normal room. An hour later, I thought to turn on the laptop to see if it works on its own, and it does. So far the laptop screen has been on fine.
