Cheap-to-tax diesels... need advice!

In an attempt to cut out as much of my monthly outgoings as possible I have come across the idea of trading in my old '03 Mondeo for one of the £30 a year tax diesel cars that are out there. (of around the same age if not a bit older and rougher :rotfl:... my budget is around £2000 at the most)
As far as I can see there are three alternatives, the Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI, the Fiesta 1.4 TDCI and the Renault Clio 1.5 DCI.
To keep it short, which one would you recommend? Are there any more cars like this around a similar price range and similar excellent mpg? Should I just stump up a bit more and get something a bit newer... most of these cars second hand have done over 100,000 miles.
Thanks!
Dan
(as a side note, we have an '04 206 1.4 hdi as a work vehicle where I work that has done over 350,000 miles and is still going strong! fantastic!)

How many years tax does £2k buy for the Mondeo.0

we just paid £134 for half a year. Also the Mondeo is 2.0 litre petrol and returns very poor mpg. I am hoping to get around £1000 trade in value for the Mondeo too.0

I would work out your annual spend on petrol for your trusted and known Mondeo and then compare it with the spend on a new and unknown car, you may be better off sticking with what you have until it bites the dust. Spending £2k to save money doesn't sound like saving money and the price gap between petrol and diesel is only set to widen through tax increases and demand is now greater than supply on diesel refinery capacity in Europe. Proceed with caution.0

What sort of miles do you do, think about how much you can save a week against how long the £2k would last keeping the Mondeo going.
We have a 52 clio £30 tax 55-60mpg, main problem is it is tiny so OK as a second car.
Think about your use cases and think what will do the job.
car load down the tip, couple of suitcases for a holiday, passengers(5door). etc.0 -
Add an Audi A2 to that list

not if it's the tdi to qualify for the £30 ved.
you could add arosa 1.4tdi
lupo 1.4tdi.
think some vauxhalls corsa's 1.2cdti and astras.
fiat panda 1.3 multijet, also fiat idea multijet.
think some nissan notes may come in at £30 ved and smart forfour cdi0 -
There's a lot of threads about dpf filters at the moment apparently they cost about £1000 to replace (if they are choked up) on diesel cars nearing the 75K - 100K mileage mark, making scrapping the car possibly the only economical solution.
Older cars (not sure before what date) don't have these dpf filters.
You could consider a petrol LPG car either already converted or to convert after you buy the new car or convert the mondeo......but I wouldn't like a car (mondeo) that has an annual tax bill of £230 ish0 -
Citroen c3 is only £20 taxThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I've got a 2004 1.4 TDCi Fiesta and I love it to bits.
From the driving seat, it's just like a Mk.3 Mondeo. You've just got less metal & plastic around you.
For a start, it's £30 VED.
Since I got it over 18 months ago, it's averaged 52.25mpg, both nipping around town and the occasional medium to long distance motorway trips.
It cruises along the motorway at 70mph (of course!) with no trouble.
OK, the boot isn't as big as my previous Mk.2 Mondeo hatchback, but it still amazes me what I can get in it. Mum's wheelchair and shopping, and I didn't have to put the rear seats down. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

You won't get £1000 trade in for your Mondeo, sorry.
We're looking at one of those Fiestas for a 2nd car atm, just can't stretch to the money to buy one
