I disagree, are o2 having the same issue? no, therefore its the redundancy design of the giff gaff 'network' that's causing the problem...it is their fault i am afraid...

Burst water main apparently, so redundant stuff could easily be affected, no?

Could it have been avoided? Perhaps, but without knowing exactly what is affected and how, it's not too easy to speculate.

Bigger providers would/should have contingency plans to route traffic away from areas affected by outages.
So it's back to getting what you pay for IMO.

I remember not that long ago that Vodafone (largest worldwide mobile company!) had a break in at one of their centres, which resulted in their users being affected for quite some hours, were also unable to reroute their network.
It seems that regardless of which company, in any field does to plan for a business continuation situation...you really can only plan for so much.

Same problem here. I can't make or receive calls. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Gotta say it's the third fairly major issue for me using giffgaff. Been with them a year now and each time a problem occurs my GF sat next to me with an o2 phone is (annoyingly) fine.

You do get what you pay for I agree, just these things make you reconsider if a saving of about £3-£5 a month is worth it... Especially when their business model is based around making people buy bundles with allowances that they don't need, such as the £10 with 250mins and unlimited internet (most people wouldn't use unlimited but their £5 packages don't have any data at all).

    From here: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Service-Updates-Notice-board/Problems-with-service-16-03-2012/m-p/3424153

    "Update - 15:52

    Hi guys,
Data should now be working for all customers."

Edit: Just checked, data is working. Though can't seem to get phone calls yet.
  • This is the first problem of any kind I've had since joining giffgaff over a year ago....but it's a big and annoying problem.
    ''apply within'' :)

    Another update, re calls:

    "Update - 16:03

Engineers are implementing a workaround for voice services now. Voice services should be working for some customers and will continue to become available within the next hour or two for the rest. If your voice services are not working yet please be patient as the workaround is being rolled out across the country."

You don't make redundancy in the same location as your front line product - well you could, but that would be as bad as just not having redundancy.

There's no speculation about it - any outage is one outage too many for a mobile network..and as others have mentioned, this isn't the first in the last 12 months for giff gaff...
