Is this correct? Business prices are increasing from April 2nd.
The business prices do normally go up a bit sooner than the retail prices.

I can't see any difference in price between 2011 and 2012. Am I missing something?
Take Packetpost Large Letter for example, which is what I use mainly. For up to 100g its currently 54p. With the price rise its going up to 65p and then they are going to be charging VAT (which they don't do on that particular service at the moment). So its going up from 54p to 78p - a rise of 44%. Expect stamp prices to go up by something similar! Currently 75p for a large letter stamp - could go up to something like £1.08!!

yes it's true businesses now dont get compensation unless they send via a fully tracked service.

A quick note aswell if you are returning items on a freepost service provided by the company concerned and they then state they haven't had it, no compensation is paid as per the changes to the business contracts. (please don't shoot the mesenger).

It's taken a while for them to go through consultation process which is what has caused the delay.

(Our local PO told me today that 1st class will cost 66p. Whether that is true or not I have no idea. )

I dont know where your PO have got this from noone except the big boys know what the prices are going to be. The info just isn't known yet.

If the retail postage goes up ~40% (46p to 66p for 1st class stamp), then i wonder if Amazon will increase the postage credits they charge customers (after-all, excluding the Vat changes the postage rates have been the same for at least 5 years)

They upped the credit by 5p last year on books

I have been looking at the new business prices for 2012. Can someone tell me how these differ from prices on franking machines? Am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks

I don't think they have released the new prices for franking yet.

At the moment, franking prices are the same as the standard business tariff prices so if you have a look at the new prices for the standard tariff it should give you a rough idea of what to expect.

One of the things I've noticed is that they have removed the 0-100g, 101-250g, 251-500g, 501-750g bands and replaced them with a single 0-750g band on the packet sort, which I know a lot of small companys use. (see p8-9 of the PDF).

So 750g will now cost the same as just 100g... thats seriously not fair on those who rely on that service.

Royal Mail say this is to 'simplify' things which is rubbish. They will know that in the up to 750g levels that the majority of packets will be those that have must exceeded the large letter sizes and strayed into being a packet. Its just a large price increase that they are trying to hide.

As a slight aside, now that RM will not be paying compensation for losses for business customers unless the item is tracked then there is going to be another consequence - increased occurances of non receipt claims.

Previously the compensation claims made would provide statistical info for RM and allow them to identify patterns of losses and in rare occassions identify serial non receipt claiments. Whilst RM would probably rarely intervene, at least a serial non reciept claiment may have believed that to make excessive claims may bring them to the attention of RM.

Under the new rules, RM will not be notified on losses incurred by business customers so they will not have this information to use anymore.

Do you think that after a while, some less than honest customers may realise that there is nothing that can be done to identify them as serial non receipt claiments?

I contacted Offcom about this and they eventually said that there will be no system in place for RM to log losses and indeed even if there was why would business customers bother to report them given that we wont be able to claim for losses?

I am led to believe that previously the info provided to RM on losses could be used to identify for instance those posties who had been stashing thousands of mail items in their lofts or dumping them on their route. Doesnt this mean that it will now be next to impossible to identify such issues?

Finally, how are RM going to produce accurate figures for non delivered items given that we wont be notifying them anymore?

I think this is a very valid point and I recall seeing this discussed when the idea was first put 'out there'.

However, remembering that conversation it seemed that as only businesses using business services were affected the system of monitoring addresses won't really have changed as I always understood the process of claiming when using business post was different anyway to those of us who just use normal post.

Obviously those using the professional services are going to lose out, but for most of the small to medium business like me there will be no difference. I have always claimed using the standard one claim form per loss, and will continue to be able ot do that. However I pay 'full' postal rates with no discounts.

I suppose that borderline business users might need to weigh up whether their discounted 'packet rate' for parcels is worth using against the number of claims being made against them. I wonder what RM would do If too many businesses give up their discounts and opt for paying normal rates, or even if the number will be statistically important enough?
