Do not accept anything less than a full new engine.

That is just not going to happen on a 8 year old car!

Why not? I once bought a 10 year old Ford Sierra. The previous owner did silly mileage on it and had a warranty. In the pile of receipts was a brand new engine supplied and fitted by the local Ford dealership at a cost of £1300. The engine was almost brand new.

Good garages do exist. Remember my parents Astra with the head gasket problem within a few weeks of them buying it, Strider? They ended up with a reconditioned engine being fitted. Not only that, the garage said the clutch plate was thin so they fitted a new clutch for free at the same time.

I know good garages exist, but unfortunately they make up only about 25% of all UK garages..... And yes I do feel bad for thinking of all of them as being dodgy and tarring them with one brush.

  • Update-

Upon examination by Master Technician, metal filings and shavings were evident in the newly fitted (during service) oil filter. So, clear evidence of engine damage. Their words " Probably new engine".

Replacement car to be delivered today.

My fair comment. An error occurred and management are doing their best to address it in a fair and timely manner.

The company may have read this thread, but I have not identified them. I will though acknowledge them and their exemplary management procedures to rectify the error/complaint once all is resolved.

Just thankful that I was wearing my 'worrying' head and declined to just accept collecting the car.

Is it a main dealer/service agent for your make?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Why not?

A new factory unit will cost more than the car is worth.

A new engine for a Grand Cherokee (via insurance) £12,500!!
  • The vehicle is a Toyota Corolla, and I agree that for it's year, the market value has to be considered despite its (previously) immaculate condition. However, the 'company' have accepted total responsibility for the 'error' which occurred and have agreed to rectify the resulting problem/s New engine/fitting.....

Replacement car for the duration, this has been delivered and is sitting on the drive.

They are not a main dealer, however I/we were not first time customers to the company and have previously on numerous occasions, always had excellent service from them.

I'll be back to update, but remain very grateful and appreciative of the input.

    Thank you.
  • Update-New engine to be fitted within the next week.

I have priced a new engine and the cost for supply only to me (trade I am aware will be somewhat less) is £5,734 + VAT

The cost of good customer service offset against the cost of bad publicity?

Ah, just as a by the by, the legal cover on the insurance document (paid for extra), apparently only encompasses accident//fire and /theft issues and this situation is not within their remit! Had the garage not admitted and accepted full responsibility for their error then it appears it would have been a take it to court situation.

Thanks again for the very useful advice I've received.
