Car serviced (interim) yesterday less than 26.000 miles on clock '54 plate. No other issue than service due. FSH.

Returning home from garage, car stopped,on roundabout Where else!

Pushed to safety-No oil, ? no sump plug.

Mechanic came, breakdown vehicle, car removed to garage.
They tell me last night it's been checked, new sump plug and oil replaced. Advised let it stand overnight and collect today.

So, how do I ensure that no damage has occurred within the engine. Not happy to just take their word and find myself needing a repalcement sump/engine whatever a little down the line.

Thank you.

With total loss of oil to the point of stopping the car, damage is a certainty.....

  • That's what I thought.

Best way forward, obtain Independent assessment prior to reclaiming car from garage?

I think that's your only real choice....

Might be worth trying to contact the manufacturer (dealerships are not manufacturers) to find out what they think, they will have done tests on preproduction vehicles to establish how long the engine can go without oil and how much damage would be incurred. They should be able to arm you with information to go back to the garage with.

IF the engine ever runs again, you can expect to see lots of dark/blue smoke from the tailpipe at high RPM.

Stoppage would indicate that the engine was at the point of seizure. No no..independent report...
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

It appears there was another fault:

Oil pressure warning light not functioning!

(Unless, of course, you continued to drive the car whilst the cluster was illuminated like Blackpool)

Main dealer advice is that cylinder head should be removed and all parts checked for scoring damage before any attempt to restart/drive. Big job& costly!

Waiting for a reply from garage head office.

    I take it, it's a dealership or a tyre/exhaust chain like KwikFit??

At any rate, they should have insurance in place for such eventualities, so it really would be stupid of them to try and put up a fight. Hope you get it sorted!

Stick to your guns, needs a new engine at their expense. If you can swear there were no negative indications, like low oil pressure warning, overheat light (good old Fiats) or temperature guage going through the roof, they have basically killed the engine.
If it was your own fault you would strip it down, rebuild and reface components and hope for the best, but when some other professional has apparently committed the fundamental, schoolboy error, it's up to them to put right.
  • Well, they've accepted full responsibility. Will bring in a Master Technician (Head Honcho) and strip the engine down and examine for damage. Depending on findings will do/replace what ever is required. If it's a new engine, so be it.

    Full apology given.

Awaiting further call back re temporary car for time off road.

It's actually my daughter's car and has been looked after better than a lot of children are!

Thank you all for your help and advice. I'll update when I know the 'verdict'

Do not accept anything less than a full new engine. They can probably get it running without but it will have the equivalent of tens of thousands of miles more wear on the engine AND turbo, if fitted.
