Today we are taking the time to celebrate reaching a total of 5000 kwh generated since we had the solar PV installed 18 months ago.

Mind you, we will need to generate a total of 25,000 kwh to pay off the upfront capital cost of the installation so it will take 7.5 years to pay it back but it is good to measure (& to celebrate) the small milestones along the way, 10% or 20% at a time!

Not wishing to be pedantic but shouldn't the above read:-

Maybe you wouldn't have recommended the new thermostat with the hindsight of John Pierpoint's post earlier this morning. smiley-laughing021.gif
Err... no. Eric's post preceded John's, and was made early that morning. John's post was made later that morning. Get it?
I'm more than happy to cross swords with anyone over my grammar, but I find the use of those stupid icons to mock my posts (again) quite annoying.

I did raise an eyebrow at the implication that Beko was Austrian! Alas, it looks as though the poor thing has already suffered the fire I was speculating on :)
  • Hi all, as you can see I am new to this site but have been a follower of Martin for many years and have saved a whole bundle of cash at home and in business through his tips so thanks Martin!
Anyway, the reason I'm posting is that I couldn't see anything on here about community-owned energy generation schemes and thought I'd get it 'out there' at least!
Reasons I think money-savers may be interested:
    Regulated schemes
    Low minimum investment
    Income tax reliefs available
    Better returns than savings accounts
Cooperative ownership (1 vote per memeber rather than share)
One organisation promoting such schemes is based locally to me and I have invested £500 for my daughter to use when the scheme ends in 20 years time. I am expecting a return of over 5% per annum on my investment and got £150 of income tax relief on it the year I invested the money (FY 2012/13)
The scheme makes money through using the capital raised through a share offer to invest in renewable energy schemes that typically make their income from electricity/heat sales and any applicable Government incentives (FIT/RHI). The scheme I invested in was a pioneering wood fuel/wood-fired commercial boiler supply chain in Herefordshire but more typical schemes include single wind turbines.
This group doesn't have any open share offers right now, and when they do they are prioritised for locals, but there are plenty of schemes in development and it has issued at least 3 sucessfully subscribed offers in the last 3 years.
    Search 'Sharenergy' in Google!
Right now they have plans for two sensibly and appropriately sized single wind turbines near Bridgnorth in Shropshire. This is not a wind farm and the turbines are correctly sited and will be completely owned by the community with only a ground rent going to the landowner. Right now though this needs the support of interested stakeholders to even get over the largely unnecessary Planning Permission 'hurdle' put in its path! The project successfully obtained permission for some monitoring masts to check that it really was a good place to generate energy from wind but needs your supporting comments to get permission - see their sub-site on Sharenergy's website - the 'Crida Wind' project.
Hope this is of interest and lets hope more local energy schemes can raise finance and pay returns to ordinary local people investing in clean, efficient and local energy generation for the future throughout the UK!

No offence intended; as to the icons; get used to it.... smiley-laughing021.gif

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).

Today was rather disappointing - for June : just 6.78 kWh. But that of course is still well over three times the cost of keeping the panels there for the day.

Month is (of course) still over target. 114% of the pvgis forecast so far and even two days as bad as today will increase that even more.

And on the rainwater front, all tanks are full - except that I didn't have enough free electricity to replace yesterday's usage from loft tank.

Bad day at the office 4.75 kwh / 1.58 O's. Suppose it could have been worse
  • @ yesterday 9% abobe PVGIS target with two days to go :)

Solar immersion working brilliantly over the last month with UPS calibrated this morning for much improved run time.

Work started preping a water channel for the hydro too.

    Cheers

That us of course a picture of a BEKO, as right clicking for its web address will reveal.
Hear is a picture of "my" BeeKay chest freezer, you would not want to sell a product into 1974 UK, with a nasty unpronounceable "Gerrie" name.

"Technical perfection at a fair price" The hinge assistance piston on one of the hinges has failed and the thermostat seems to think the external temperature must be about 35 degrees.
