My mum made yoghurt for years, it was always set with some water and to my taste very tart. For that reason I wouldn't touch natural yoghurt until about 3 years ago.

The cost of natural yoghurt is very reasonable in Lidl etc, and Asda sell 1L tubs of a really mild yoghurt for £1 which is perfect for smoothies. Whilst I am usually a "make-it-at-home" person, with cost of ingredients and time factored in it just doesn't seem worth it.

Homemade is so much smoother than shop bought and it takes 5mins if that to make it.

Take out carton of UHT milk from cupboard, open and pour into a large jug.

Add two tbs of starter yog (saved from last batch unless this is your first attempt).

Add two tbs dried milk powder, stir it all up.

Pour into 6 yog jars, put onto maker tray, put on lid, switch on, leave for 10 hours if that, switch off, take off lid, eat warm or put into fridge to chill.

    Easy!

I pay 59p for Moo UHT semi at Home Bargains, dried milk is about £1.50 for a decent sized tin in Lidl (have tried Tesco one and the Lidl is better, less granular).

For a really creamy (but not low fat) yoghurt I use a tin of evaporated milk topped up with milk, I don't bother with the milk powder. A tin of evaporated milk is only 30p at Tesco at the moment.

I find that it is creamy enough if I use Moo Organic milk, especially if I drain it to make Greek style yoghurt.

Plus, you don't get the health benefits if you use evaporated milk.

    Hi sb44,

    Thanks for this thread :)

I have a EasiYo but I'm never quite happy with the yogurt it produces - I just don't think it maintains the right temperatures and makes really bitter and quite thin yogurt. But maybe that's because I always used skim milk and not semi?

Anyway, I've seen one of these Rachel Allen ones on eBay and might treat myself to it. Not only because you say it makes excellent yogurt but also because I like the idea of it being in little jars; would be perfect for taking to work!

I don't know why they list is as Kids yoghurt maker though.

I have found at least one jar in the cupboard which is exactly the same size as these. Tesco 185g horseradish jars are exactly the same size as these if you are looking to get spare jars.

It is lovely on its own without sweetener or flavourings (have another batch in at the minute due out at 9.30pm when it will have been in for 10 hrs).

I normally flavour mine after it has been made in the slow cooker but this way I can add before going in the heater so that the flavours develop more.

My mum has been making yoghurt before yoghurt makers were invented! As have others for centuries.

You don't have to have a business anymore, they must be in need of extra trade.

I assume you have one in your area, if so, they will fill in a form for you at the customer service desk on the way in.
    ;)

Oh dear, the nearest one to me is 100 miles away! I think I'll go for the ebay one. Thanks for posting the link quintwins.
