How to find out when someone died.

Would she have died very recently?
Not 100% sure, but I think if it was a few months ago or more you might be able to find her either in the free BMD online (if you know her full name), or by putting her name into one of the genealogy sites. There's a free one which some libraries have called Ancestry.0 -
I have a tracesmart account (https://www.tracesmart.co.uk) from when I had to trace someone a few years ago - I never cancelled it. If you want to PM me any details, I don't mind having a look for you

I would just like to say a HUGE thank you to the brilliant lady that is Cranky40 who has helped me loads.
Through her help I now know loads more details of my step grandmothers DOB, Marriage dates and the fact that she died after 2005 so when I phone the registry office tomorrow I'll have a much more info to give them.
Thanks again to everyone who's given me fantastic suggestions and I'll let you know how I get on.
Oh and I may well have found a new hobby
