How to find out when someone died.

PasturesNew wrote: »I'm watching this because I am trying to find out IF somebody's died.... which would amount to almost the same question. Trying to contact an uncle after a recent bereavement and it's dead ends all the way ... so I figure he's either died or in a care home - and no way to find out without doing an 800 mile round trip to door knock old family homes/haunts and hope I stumble across somebody with the answer.
Again, you could try the records office as mentioned to the OP, or you could try putting an ad in the local paper. I have seen solicitors do that when they are trying to find someone who may or may not be deceased especially when they are estranged.0 -
Pastures new - you could possibly try ringing or writing to some of the Care homes in his local area - I work in one and we often get general enquiries from relatives or friends trying to track down people. Do a google search to see what comes up.Back on the trains again!0

looby - how long ago did she die? What year? Hubby might still have his ancestry membership (it's due for renewal any day so he might not either) if it's 2005 or before and you can give me name and area in a PM I might be able to look - when hubby's in cos I don't know his password. Depends on name and location though. I prob won't be able to help if she's Jane Smith of London.0

we don't know spendless, seriously no one can remember. As I said we had very little contact with her after Granddad died (that was 18 years ago now and it was her choice) Thanks for the offer but my sis has already tried on the Ancestry site and couldn't find her
I have a feeling it was after ex and I split up so sometime in the last 8 years (but obviously not that recently my memory isn't that bad lol) 0 -
Do you know the area she went to live in? If so, contact the local Register Office. They are often very helpful with these kind of problems.
Otherwise, try contacting the local funeral directors. One of them must have dealt with the cremation.0 -
She could have died using her single name, or any other name she was using, or she could have married again. Tracking women can be tricky.0

sorry I thought I replied to this earlier but got distracted.Phone the registry office in the area she lived in. My husband knew nothing about his Father except a rough area of where he was born and they managed to find his Fathers birth certificate. I cant see it being any different for a death certificate.
Thanks for this, we were under the impression that you couldn't contact the register office directly for this kind of thing anymore. I've just googled the number and I'll pass the info on to my sister who is dealing with it all.0 -
we've searched all the names she's been known by jic, she definitely didn't get married again after Grandad and was still using his name when she died.PasturesNew wrote: »She could have died using her single name, or any other name she was using, or she could have married again. If you know her last known address, you could try having a ring round the crematoria in the local area to see if she is on their records. The person arranging her funeral will have filled in an order for cremation form and the details you need would have been on it.
I have no idea though, whether or not the crematorium are allowed to disclose the information to you, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.0 -
