Put in a pond thats a good way to attract them.. we had a few frogs visit before the pond but now we have loads... trouble is we also have Koi in the pond so they will almost certainly eat all the spawn:rotfl:

Good points are they eat slugs and other nasties... bad side is if you have cats they may bring frogs into the house.......

Frogs spend most their lives on land feeding and come to the water to breed in early spring .If you want to encourage them you need to provide a nice pond for them to breed .As frogs that have hatched from tadpole do not return to the pond for several years and may take several years to find your pond you might like to speed things up by getting some spawn from some one who has a surplus..If you live near Usk I have loads of spare as the frogs have produced far too much for my ponds to support and I feed them as well!!

If you want them for your garden you'd be better off trying to get some toadspawn. Toads generally settle in a garden and stay put there, whereas frogs wander. An upturned plant pot or similar makes a nice hidey hole for toads, and they'll eat lots of unwanted beasties for you.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

    Hi do it today,
I've got a railway station at the bottom of my garden!!!
I've got a pond approx 15ft x 5ft. It's loaded with frogs this last week - all mating - stuck together!!
Pity you live down London, you could have had loads of frogspawn off me.

Once you get them spawning in your pond, I've been told the frogs return to the pond where they were born , every year - will travel a mile or so.

  • We have frogs too, they're wonderful little characters. They eat slugs and so on, and are ever so useful to have around, we garden organically and have never had a problem with slug damage since the frogs turned up. We have a wildlife pond - no fish, plenty of nearby foliage, and sloping sides for their access. They appeared by themselves and certainly seem to be about all the time, the pond if next to my seat and they're croaking away most evenings. My 2 year old loves them and regularly decides to be a frog...

Last year I hit a frog wth the strimmer cord and it struggled off B4 I could catch it ..This time of year I regularly patrol my ponds a night to see whats around and imagine my surprise to see a frog with a missing lower front leg and a lump where it had healed over.He was sat there all by himself while the other males were clinging on to females.I know one should not realy interfear with nature but I felt guilty of depriving him of his o@ts so dislodged one of the other male and replaced it with "hoppy" and put them in a newly dug pond that has not yet got any frogs ...

  • Def. recommend having frogs. We had loads in our last house and they really kept the bugs down in the garden. As for the strinmming/mowing, I developed a technique where I sort of kicked ahead with one foot while strimming and they always heard the mower coming and got out of the way. Luckily I never got one but there were a few close calls. We recently moved and have just put a pond in at our new house, so I am hoping to get some here now. I'd love to get some toads though, wish I knew where I could get some toad spawn!!
