Regarding removal of the DPF

    How would that work? How would you have "cheap" included in something which had to be a sealed system?

    DPF is a good solution far better than bloody Adblue.

    Why does it have to be sealed, if removes the particulates it doent matter how its accomplished.

    Actually I think the DPF is a poor solution, its a shutting the gate after the horse has bolted approach. Dont know what Adblue is Im afraid.

    Think about it, we have oil filters, air filters, pollen filters, fuel filters how about having a disposable particulate filter.
    It cant be beyond the wit of man can it.

    Diesel particulates are much much smaller than anything filtered by oil/air/pollen filters, we're talking around 100 nanometres in diameter here.

    The soot that you also see from diesel engines is much less harmful than the tiny ones.

    This necessitates a much more complex filter setup because it has to trap the tiny ones while not getting clogged up by the soot. It needs to be a sealed system because if it was just a push-in cartridge or sealed in by friction like an air filter then the gaps around the edges would be large enough for the small ones to get past and all you'd really stop is the soot.

    I've never seen a dpf, but they have a service life and can be changed
    I don't know why it costs £1000 to change them

    However this "sealed system" discussion is no reason to make changing them impossible or expensive no more expensive than the cost of the unit plus a half hour labour anyway. All you need to do is have a lipped canister filter -so that the lip extends to the outside the exhaust pipe- inside a chamber sealed with 3 bolts.

    To replace simply unbolt and change the cannister.
    To drive without DPF simply remove cannister.
    Replacement cost will be limited to the price of the cannister.

    I remember seeing a TV news item way back in the 1990's where an inventor had designed a 'sound box' which used high-frequency sound to force the particulates to bond together to form heavy particles that fell harmlessly to the ground rather than dispersing into the air.
    There was also a 'fan' that claimed to 'chop-up' the particulates.

    As ozone (produced by high voltages) can react to just about anything, I am wondering if it is feasible to use an ozone injector to inject a controlled amount of ozone into the exhaust, thus neutralizing the particulates ?.

    As for the LEZ, even if your vehicle meets the Euro V standard, if it was made before 2002, you will not be allowed in without fitting a special exhaust system. This does however, open up a can of worms if, for instance, you own a 2003 Transit van, but due to blowing-up the engine, you have under the bonnet a 2.5 banana engine from a defunct 1997 Transit you had sitting in the corner of the yard. In effect, you should be unable to enter the LEZ, but because it is based on paperwork, you are free to enter as you wish.

    There's some information regarding DPF cleaning and regeneration on this car site.

    My guess is don't buy a car with a DPF filter if you're only going to do town driving as you won't allow the natural regeneration to take place.
    Where would we be without tea?

    Manufacturer's fit DPFs for one reason, and one reason alone; to allow the car to meet ever increasing strict emissions requirements (which are legislated for to help the environment and the air quality we breathe)

    If an OEM could make their engine meet the emissions requirements by simply changing a few parameters in their software, do you really think they would spend a small fortune fitting a DPF?

    When you modify you car's emissions so they no longer meet the legislative requirements, it's no longer legal.
    (If it does continue to meet the emissions requirements there would be no need to revert it back to the original design in order to get it through an MOT)
    MOT only test for smoke so if you remove the dpf and it does not chuck out a load of smoke you pass the MOT test.
  • Can anyone help. i have a 307sw 1.6hdi and i recently had the dpf removed. it was done without my permission when i took it into the garage after finding the engine management light kept coming on and the car going into limp mode.
    After what I've read online it seems that having the dpf removed is not necessarily a bad thing and in fact may save me problems further down the line....
    however I'm getting alot of smoke coming from my exhaust...and i mean alot. i know it is common to get some if you put your foot down after city driving for a bit but this is most of the time I'm driving particularly whenever I brake and several people driving behind me have commented.

    In addition the fan keeps running occasionally for up to 5 mins after i turn off the engine...which i thought was a sign that a regeneration had been taking place but sutrely if the dpf is gone it shouldn't be trying to regenerate.

    and finally instead of an increase in power there seems to be an intermittent drop in power from when i first got the car...not as bad a limp mode but noticeable.

    seems to me something isn't right. any thoughts?

    You need to take it to a diesel specialist.

    Sounds like its over fuelling or the injectors are kaput. Instead of a fine mist which burns cleanly. You getting a jet and a poor burn.

    Turbo? Split boost pipes?
