MSE Article discussion: Mobile Phone Insurance
Comments

my daughter received an iPhone5s for her birthday, she is a) very lucky (and spoilt), and b) only 13. I am having issues trying to source mobile phone insurance. We do not have the Nationwide Account that covers all the phones in the household. We have a Nat West Joint Account that would only cover the phones owned by my wife and I. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you0

some policies I have looked at a)won't cover 'users' under 15 or 16, and b) won't cover accidental damage or theft, the two most likely causes of a claim. That said, look at Gadget Cover, which will give some rudimentary protection.
Good luck. It's a minefield.0 -
Does anyone have contact details please. Have emailed them on what I thought was their email but no response. Telephone no and address would be good please as I need to cancel an insurance for something I no longer have. Thank you.0

I think Citymain act for many insurers and as such have different contact details depending on the insurer. My insurer was InsureAndGo and the phone number in Portsmouth is 0333 999 7920.
hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend an insurer who will insure an android smart phone that is about 18 months old?
Thanks0 -
Thanks petershare - in the end I went with gadget-cover. My phone is 9 months old and I had a near-miss with it and thought I should cover it. This company offers first month of insurance free and then is £4.99 a month. It covers for loss (at a cost of £1 extra a month), and it covers phones up to 18 months old. I'd recommend them. :T0

I took the MSE advice and insured my sons Iphone with Insurance2Go. He had it stolen on holiday a month ago and we've spent the last 4 weeks going backwards and forwards to the insurance company and the network provider (EE) to try and get the claim through. Basically Insurance2Go ask for a long list of information, wont accept bills as proof of ownership and require you to get confirmation from your network provider of ownership, usage etc. Inevitably, EE have been hard to contact and useless at responding and the net result is, despite paying £70 for insurance, one month on we are no further forward. My advice would be that you get what you pay for and this is one insurance company to avoid.0

I took the advice of MSE to have my brand new iPhone 6 covered by Insurance2go.
I have never used any insurance before and having read so many bad stories of other insurance companies trying to wriggle out of claims I thought I would pre-empt any issues.
I read through all their documentations surrounding what to do when making a claim and thought to save any hassle should I ever need to claim that I would provide all the required proof of purchase to them upfront to hold on file.
I emailed them copies of my eBay transaction, my PayPal transaction and my credit card statement clearly showing my purchase. The phone I purchased brand new from a high rated user who is selling many of iPhone, all brand new never opened.
I received a reply from CityMain advising "We kindly advise that in the event of a claim you will need to provide a valid VAT receipt confirming the make, model, IMEI/serial number, purchase date and the amount paid anything else would not be acceptable".
I called them up on 0333 999 1920 and advised them that the seller I purchased this from is not VAT registered so unable to provide a VAT receipt however all other information they have requested in on the documentation that I have already sent them. Their response is that this would not allow for a valid claim.
I cannot believe what they are saying since I have all the proof of my purchase, still have my phone on my own person in pristine condition so can even show them this in person if needed but more so there is nowhere within their insurance terms stating that any receipts for the item should come from a VAT registered company only.
Due to the time I have had to wait for their reply I am now outside of my 14 day cancellation period so now arguing with them about cancelling my insurance and getting a full refund since I believe they have misled me.
I am just very lucky that I am not finding this out while in the process of trying to make a claim otherwise I would be even more annoyed.. I can only guess that there are many people out there who have also tried to insure a phone that they purchased from a non VAT registered company and are currently under the belief that they are fully insured.. If it is via Insurance2go I'm afraid you are not!0
