You might wish to consider re-aligning the old dish to a different satellite, so that you could use it to receive foreign channels.

    K-B and Spike,

When I accepted an offer to “return to Sky” with a 50% discount, a couple of years ago, I stipulated, negotiated and obtained a new HD box, a new (second) dish and new wiring as part of the deal.

I pointed out that the original dish was ours to keep and that we were now using it for FreeSat.

The second dish (with a quad LNB) was mounted, without demur from the installer, just below our existing dish (which, too, has a quad LNB, all four of its connections being in use for FreeSat).

The Sky installer (a very nice guy who performed an extremely professional job) did mention to his manager, the night before, that his customer was insisting on a new (second) dish for this installation and the manager told him that if that was what the customer wanted, give the customer what he wants. :)

That may be so but I'm only going by MY experience as a Sky installer,if the existing dish was being used for Freesat & all four ports on the LNB were in use, then the installer had no option but to fit a new dish & cabling for the new service.

Super, but why not just fit an Octo?

Because we now have the option to put an Octo on the new dish (which is within easy reach) and re-align the original dish to a different satellite. :)

Could be handy if, for example, Sky changes the basis of its charging for the F1 channel next year: no way would I pay for the Sports channels.

In the meantime, it gives me an immediate back-up dish if there is a failure with the LNB or cabling. Just a simple swap-over of the leads connected to the boxes until we can get it repaired.

It also gives us the option to add FreeSat boxes (and/or Sky Multi-room) with twin feeds to other rooms in the house. I could put an Octo on both dishes! :D

Yes, that was my deliberate tactic!

I wasn’t arguing with you, Spike; just thought you (and others) might be interested to know that getting a second dish with Sky is achievable – and how. ;)

I realise that there can be planning issues in regard to having more than one dish but, fortunately, neither of mine can be seen from the street or public land, nor from any neighbouring houses.

    No drama's,
It's not Sky's policy tho unless it's a situation like yours or where the existing dish is difficult to get to & breaks Sky's H&S policy,ie,where the existing dish is above a new conservatory or an unsafe structure.
