Some friends of ours were having their hallway floor relaid and the builder had put some self-levelling mixture down so the wood would have a nice level surface to be added on.

To prevent mail from be delivered and falling into the setting solution, they taped up the letterbox, and put a notice on it.

This did not stop someone delivering chinese takeaway menus from peeling off the notice and the tape to deliver the junk mail, which then stuck fast into the self levelling solution.

So whatever you do, people will probably not take a blind bit of notice.

We have gates to our house, and the postbox is outside by the gates. After we have collected the post in the morning, we simply leave the bottom of the box open, so anyone who delivers their rubbish simply sees it fall straight out of the bottom again.

The Chinese Restaurant leaflet delivery person would probably just tape it up.

After all, they have a spare piece of tape.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

    all that effort on fonts
now go and do some research on who gets paid for what

I'm curious - who does get paid (and for what??)

Because for some time I've been popping things back in the letterbox.

Also some DCA's have been chasing a previous tenant - and those go straight back in the letterbox "unmarked". (I know its the same letter each time because I leave a very subtle mark each time!)

I have had one up for years and it gets ignored too - it drives me insane to the point that I'd chase after them and hand them their rubbish back. As most of my areas leaflet drops occur after the postman has been, I bought a lockable letterbox and now just lock it when I get in from work. Expensive but no more nasty junk.

you're the one spouting off.go do some research.
though considering you decide to subtly mark a letter, rather than mark it gone away.
I think you have a little too much time on your hands.

Royal Mail gets paid for delivering all this junk mail

    ( Do what I do )

Collect all the junk mail that has been delivered by the royal mail with no address on it and the next time you pass a post box post it back to them free of charge.
If everybody started to do this Royal Mail might get the message.

This is what I do, have done for ages! :) Even though I'm already signed up to the Royal Mail site for no junk mail, they still post it on through!

To be fair it takes a lot less time to mark a letter than it does to write "not at this address". So I'm actually saving a bit of time this way.

And how am I spouting off?

    the first time maybe
multiple times, well what do you think?
whgat exactly is the purpose of a subtle mark?
so you can get all excited doing it all again?

i think you'll find you can opt-out of any unnamed mail being delivered to your home address ex-postie. goes to show why you now an ex-postie, your probably one of the ones that was still putting it through the door!

I estimate it will be approx 15-17 times before the time to make the subtle mark takes longer than the time to write not at this address.

At this stage I'll look to refining my technique. Might even outsource it.
