  • Possibly, but it does allow you to build up a 3 dimensional picture of the forum regulars and, more importantly, it allows you to dismiss the 1 dimensional . :)

to be fair this forum is called "debate house prices and the economy" not "lets talk about what's in your portfolio", and there are other more appropriate sub-forums for willy waiving about your finances. not that i actually care if you want to talk about your house renovation project, or how many btls you have (unless you're called nollag and you can't even be bothered to learn how to work out how to calculate the invented yield on your fantasy btl portfolio).

To be fair though there was no willy waiving, there was no mention of success or failure. Merely stating ownership of investment property is not enough information to guage whether that investment is showing a profit or loss. I'm sure there are many examples of failing buy to let portfolios.

My post was meant to convey two things:

    1. You don't have to live in London to invest in it
    2. Empathy with Mr Chip about moving out of London (which is one the best things that I have ever done, I haven't regretted it even for one day out of over 6 years) which allowed me to get a dog (which wasn't feasible living in a 2 bed flat in London). My dog is my greatest asset (if you can call him that as we consider him as family).

I don't have a chip on my shoulder.

You must realise though that when large numbers of people have no hope of ever owning one property, the chances of a lot of your reading audience "investing in London" are somewhat slim. Let alone obtaining eight properties.

I think it should have been fairly obvious when I said we couldn't afford to buy in London so moved away that I'm not about to set up some kind of London property empire co-ordinated from the provinces.

I'm glad buy to let landlording worked out for you, a lot of tenants of buy to let landlords who will never own the houses they are effectively buying, aren't so enthusiastic.

You didn't actually say that you couldn't afford to buy, what you said was this (this is copied and pasted from your post):

I remember living in London, wondering glumly if we would ever be able to afford to live there...

Which I took to mean that you struggled to be able to afford to live there long term (either renting OR owning) and decided that the value (and lifestyle) was better outside of London. Which I also did. A couple I know moved out of London because after having a child they couldn't afford to live there, they retained their flat as an investment property and bought in Dorking.

Please tell me Brit isn't a traffic warden.

    No wonder he's so bitter.

I think Brit is a policeman, I have to say I wouldn't want to live in an invironment where there were no police, they do a very important job.

I agree, I don't know what I'd do if someone wasn't there to report a crime to. How would I get a crime number to claim with??

You're only allowed to post financial details on this financial discussion forum if you are homeless but working. The 'but working' bit is important because if you are on benefits (regardless of the fact that you may have been a high rate taxpayer for 20 years and on benefits for 2 months) you are subject to the same derision as anyone doing OK financially.

I'm surprised DervProf isn't here remonstrating with you for daring to mention your personal finances on this financial discussion forum. No doubt he'll be along soon....

Personally, I like to hear about people's finances on this financial discussion forum as it helps me see what other people in the same age group/circumstances as myself are doing, giving me pointers towards my own wealth management. So thanks chuck for mentioning your financial details on this financial discussion forum.

Is that long hand for: "I want a little cuddle to let me know that I'm doing ok".

Anyone got any idea how Edinburgh could fall by such a big chunk? Seems very odd.

(Warning - pure speculation! I have no figures to back this up)

Possibly because the tram fiasco is having a huge detrimental effect on business, not to mention any knock-on effect on residential housing.

And a quick google suggests that the prices in Edinburgh rose 509% () between 1982 and 2007 so it really was at the bubbliest bit of the bubble (if you see what I mean).
