You don't have to live in London to invest in it. Like you we lived there but then moved out, but we still have 8 properties there. We now live in Dorking, best thing I ever done, we love living in the North Downs for walking (and jogging and cycling with) our dog.

God what a huge chip you have on that shoulder. I don't care how much money you have! (or don't).

There are plenty people with far more than me (good luck to them), so it would be very presumptious of me to assume that, which I didn't. The fact that someone owns 8 investment properties doesn't necessarily mean that they are wealthy, for all you know I could be in negative equity. If it wasn't for that chip on your shoulder you might have considered that before posting.

As someone who obviously has a few investment properties, can I ask you a genuine question chucknorris. Do you think that buying a BTL now in the current climate with the possible outlook as it is, is a good investment?

You're only allowed to post financial details on this financial discussion forum if you are homeless but working. The 'but working' bit is important because if you are on benefits (regardless of the fact that you may have been a high rate taxpayer for 20 years and on benefits for 2 months) you are subject to the same derision as anyone doing OK financially.

I'm surprised DervProf isn't here remonstrating with you for daring to mention your personal finances on this financial discussion forum. No doubt he'll be along soon....

Personally, I like to hear about people's finances on this financial discussion forum as it helps me see what other people in the same age group/circumstances as myself are doing, giving me pointers towards my own wealth management. So thanks chuck for mentioning your financial details on this financial discussion forum.

I don't think it's a question that I can answer yes or no to, without conditions.

I would not buy any more but that is mainly because of my age (I'm 54) as I really don't want to be a landlord much more than about 10 years. I think over the next 10 years the risks are more significant than the potential return (which I would perceive as minimal).

If I was at least 15 years younger I probably would invest further, but not right now, probably in a couple of years from now. Not because I think prices will crash, but do I think they will be stagnant and therefore drop slightly in real terms (taking inflation into account).

But at my time of life I am looking forward to consolidation and enjoying what I have rather than taking on more risk and trying to make more.

Possibly, but it does allow you to build up a 3 dimensional picture of the forum regulars and, more importantly, it allows you to dismiss the 1 dimensional sockies like yourself. :)

to be fair this forum is called "debate house prices and the economy" not "lets talk about what's in your portfolio", and there are other more appropriate sub-forums for willy waiving about your finances. not that i actually care if you want to talk about your house renovation project, or how many btls you have (unless you're called nollag and you can't even be bothered to learn how to work out how to calculate the invented yield on your fantasy btl portfolio).

To try and drag this back on topic

Anyway, I can post links (I think) so here is the report

    http://www.landreg.gov.uk/upload/documents/HPI_Report_Jan_12_pv4ep17.pdf

    Annual Change;

    London
    +2.9%

    North East
    -4.5%

    South West
    -0.6%

    South East
    +0.5%

    East
    -0.4%

    Wales
    -3.8%

    Yorkshire & The Humber
    -3.7%

    East Midlands
    -2.7%

    West Midlands
    -2.2%

    North West
    -4.2%

That link is only for England and Wales. Anyone got any idea how Edinburgh could fall by such a big chunk? Seems very odd.
