The simpler solution would be to use a bit less water by pricing it by the pint.
it's been years since i lived anywhere without a water meter in london, so this is already the case for many of us. i have to say it makes not a blind bit of difference to how much water i use, i'm afraid.
we don't go as far as e.g. brisbane though, where as i understand it, people are fined (through their water bill) if they use more than a certain amount of water each month, it's socially unacceptable to have a shower that lasts more than 3 minutes, and you can only water the garden or fill the pool with rainwater.
but then again, they had a 10 year+ drought, and it was rare to see green vegetation. not sure if this policy is continuing given that all it does there these days0

Wow, a shower that lasts less than 3 minutes? I am in there at least 15/20 minutes, minimum - washing hair, conditioning hair, shaving, washing. Not possible in 3 minutes, not if you are female (unless you have no hair or very short hair, mine is waist length, don't shave your legs or anywhere else either :rotfl:)0

We already have some pretty hefty water storage here, and are installing a grey water system. I think in future years it could be money well spent....not for the price of water but for the garden i hope to put in here. Brits are wasteful of water generally i think, and i am particularly bad, but keeping a lot being used twice, indeed thrice or more here, will hopefull reduce my water guilt!0

It was also against the rules to put your washing machine rinse water down the drain; you had to use it to wash the next lot of clothes.
We've had so much rain in the last year that the dams are now more than 100% full. Did you see the amazing pictures after the floods in Wagga?
The stuff that looks like snow is spider webs. It was like that all over apparently.0

I can.... shave legs etc and then get in shower, quick spurt to wet my body and head hair, turn shower off. Wash all over the body and hair, turn shower on...rinse all off.
 Out of shower.
I can also have a bath in less than 10 minutes (including washing hair) with less water than most have in a normal shower.
There is so much waste when people keep the shower running when they are doing the things where it does not need to be kept on. Ex hubby used to have a shower every morning under the assumption it was cheaper than a bath...well it would have been if he hadn't kept it going full pelt for blooming 30 minutes while he was peeing about shaving etc. We tested it one day and put the plug in, he used twice the water I did when I had a bath.
But then I am a stingy begger and hate waste. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0

Let them drink houses.1. The house price crash will begin.
 2. There will be a dead cat bounce.
 3. The second leg down will commence.
 4. I will buy your house for a song.0

I never take more than 5 minutes in the shower and am puzzled as to why anyone would need longer, unless they're habitually caked in filth and need to chisel grime out of various crevices.
I think we're going to have to think a bit more carefully about this precious resource; hopefully rainwater butts will start to become the norm for garden useage. I never bother watering my lawn; grass is so resilient it's green again the next time it rains. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
