Paypal issued refund without asking!

All

Just received an email today from Paypal, saying a refund has been issued to a buyer of an item they bought at the beginning of Jan for £320. My paypal balance is now showing -£320! Unfortunately the buyers address was unconfirmed, where do I go from here to try and get my money back. Helpful paypal are saying theres nothing they can do because it's been sent to a unconfirmed address. i sent via special delivery and have proof of delivery, any luck with going down that route?

Any advice? Very annoyed and upset at the moment!

Cheers

As far as I'm aware, you sent to an unconfirmed address and therefore you have v.limited, if any, comeback.

How many times do we have to hear variations of the same story before people learn to READ the seller protection t's and c's on the paypal website?
When dealing with large sums especially.
what was the reason the refund was issued for?
your only option for recourse is likely to be the small claims court.

What I don't understand is why don't Paypal just use confirmed addresses and nothing else, what is the point of having unconfirmed addresses?

Sounds like the money is lost I guess, whats the cost involved in going through the small claims court?

Didn't say any reason, just refund.

What I was annoyed about, I was only contacted today when it was filed 8 Jan through Paypal.

For that sort of money i would start gathering evidence.

Call Paypal and find out why this has happened (they don't seem to have given a reason yet).

Who signed for it ...get that frm RM Website.

Start checcking out the buyer via 192.com, directory enquiries etc

Contact buyer via phone and find out what is going on. It will help if you stay calm and listen very carefully to what they say, they will hopefully trip tthemselves up with inconsistencies in their story.

Once you have gathered enough info you can decide on the route you wish to take
  • I had the same happen to me once, for £250, not sure now whether they were confirmed or not.

Seemed the mother had bought the item on her card on behalf of her son, didn't recognise the transaction when her statement came through and so notified her Credit Card.

I gave them a call, the lady was really apologetic and sent a cheque through straight away.

I'm hoping that you have the same success golly99 and that this is something that you can resolve easily. Like Hintza says, give them a polite call first ( if you have a correct number ! ) see what they say, then take it from there.

    Paypal are like gangsters sometimes.

I thought you had to give your side of the story regarding disputes before any action's taken. They can't just declare you owe them £320 out of the blue, considering you're also a customer of there's.

Well, had the contact details via ebay and they sounded well shifty, denied anybody being called that name etc. Gonna get it logged through Paypal and Ebay now.

If you called the buyer on details through Ebay then inform Ebay that you have done so and they ednied the person exsisting. Carry on trying to get a reason from Paypal as to why it was refunded - You might want to look into whether you can claim this as package lost in post (sorry I don't know if you could... would it be covered?) and failing that then for £320 I would DEFINITELY look at small claims court or reportign to police as fraud. Alternatively then depending on where they are... take a drive to the address you sent the item to and ask them for it back please :)
