Faulty Iphone 4 - What to Do?

My mum has had an Iphone for about 3 months, the first one was exchanged within a month and the speaker stopped working. This morning when I called her, she couldn't hear me, although I could her her clearly. She's not dropped it etc. so i'm going round tonight to try a few trouble shooting exercises (she's a bit clueless on phones) If that doesn't work, whats my first port of call? Apple, or claim on the insurance? The excess on the phone insurance is £50 though, but shouldn't it be covered my warranty? FWIW, I don't live ANYWHERE near an Apple store. I'm near York. Thanks

Contact the supplier. If they would like you to use the warranty, they will direct you to Apple.

I think insurances, unlike warranties, normally cover the accidental damage, not faults.

The supplier of the phone has to repair or replace it under the Sale of the Goods Act.
The manufacturer has to do the same under the warranty.
It's your call to chose the one to deal with. Apple are very good, but for some reason Martin recommends to deal with the retailer in the first place: Consumer Rights Armour
  • her phone is through 3 Mobile. Any thoughts on this? Are they usually good, or bad??

Just book in to see an Apple Genius. If it's faulty and in warrenty they'll give you a new one.

As i said earlier, I live no where near an apple store. I live near York, meaning the nearest store is either Gatehead or Manchester.

The only advantage of using an Apple store is that there's a small chance they can repair it instead of giving you a reconditioned phone. If you believe the fault is of such a nature that the phone will almost certainly need to be replaced, then just use Apple's courier service.

But I still don't have a car, neither does my mum, and I doubt her wheelchair battery will get her to Sheffield and back. Train isn't really an option either. I'll give Apple a call after work and see what they suggest. Thanks

Is it a 4S? If so, she possibly has the OCNA (outgoing call no audio) problem that has affected a fair number of users. Search the Apple official forum for the above phrase and you'll find a 160 odd page thread. It seems that iOS 5.1 does provide a solution in some cases.

You can do it online, Apple send you a box, and you call a number and their courier comes and collects it at your conveninece then a few days or so later a replacement arrives.

Pretty easy, and I think you can do an advance swap where they send you a phone and you return yours in the packaging they sent the new one in, but you need to register a credit card, and if you don't return the faulty handset they charge you for the refurb as if it was a straight forward sale.

All done on the Warranty bit on Apples web site
