Yes, that is exactly how it works, except I initiated the process by phoning Orange who then put me through to Apple. Your first contact should be with the supplier, who may then direct you to Apple as their agent for carrying out a replacement under Section 11N of the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. If you contact the warranty provider directly without going through the supplier, you may lose your rights if a subsequent fault occurs after the warranty period has expired.Pretty easy, and I think you can do an advance swap where they send you a phone and you return yours in the packaging they sent the new one in, but you need to register a credit card, and if you don't return the faulty handset they charge you for the refurb as if it was a straight forward sale.
