LIR - took the words out of my mouth. One thing worse than snobbery is inverted snobbery. I used to love fish roe on toast as a kid - we would only have had it if it was cheap - in fact its very OS to use the bits that woudl have been disguarded - and well salting is just another form of preserving and all OSers love that right?

40 years ago people would have been laughing at the notion of pasta....

I have everythng except the bottaga in my cupboards and freezer - squid is cheap tasty and quick to cook - great with pasta, rice and often reduced on the fresh fish counter.
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I only quoted a small part, but excellent post! :T

I can assure you that it's baked beans (or tinned ravioli, in my DH's case) on toast being served in my London kitchen as a storecupboard dinner. I even live in a posh bit. ;)

I almost actually have these ingredients :rotfl:
Lidl's sun dried tomatoes have capers in the jar and I have been collecting the capers up for about a year just in case of... i don't know!
I have a few tins of cod roe and some herring milts in the freezer. Okay it's not caviar and costs about £2 a kilo but it's still fish eggs :p
I really like seafood and squid and octopus are easily found for less than £5 a kilo which is cheaper than most meats so I do have bags of it prepared in my freezer!
And I have a bag of posh dried mushrooms that were a hand me down from a chinese friend before they left the country.
Living cheap in central London :rotfl:

I have never read so much pretentious claptrap in all my life If this is Camerons 'We are all in it together sort of thing then the litterati of the 'London set' must be living on another planet.
I think I speak for a greater majority of folk on here who would not know a 'bottarga' if it jumped up and bit them on the butt.
I live in a real world where bangers and mash and cheese on toast , 'normal' food is the order of the day.
OK for those that can afford to spend money on over-hyped fish eggs, good luck to them I have tasted caviar and quite honestly I wouldn't give it houseroom
I am so glad I no longer waste my hard pressed pension on national newspapers if this is the sort of tosh they come up with I can rustle up a quick meal from my food cupboards
or fridge /freezer and it wouldn't be squid or ceps or anything else that sounds rather disgusting.
A little while ago I tried some japanese sushi and found it awful and was reminded of the 'Emporers New Clothes story' I lived in London for most of my life and never bought stuff like this I think its only in specific small enclaves of London where you would find soppy beggers buying this sort of stuff

I agree with you totally except the sushi bit...I LOVE sushi. Mind you I also like the welsh Laverbread, which is made from the same species of seaweed. I know some people find it vile, but I think it is nom nom nom, and it's incredibly good for you, not expensive really, and you CAN forage your own.., round here anyway!

I grew to love sushi, as it was often the only Gluten Free* thing in the 'meals to go' section of Mr T. when I couldn't pick a sarnie! I'd tried it years ago and not been overly impressed...but I guess my tastes have changed a little, after a couple of goes, I was hooked, and now I look forward to going to the bigger store, as they have a better choice!

    * I know that there is some gluten in the packs of sushi, in the soy sauce I think!

    :oshhhh

I cooked squid for Saturday tea a couple of weeks ago.

It was lovely - I'd never bought it before, and saw a couple of them had been whoopsied down to 20p for two at the end of the day, so I gave them a go. They came out delicious, with a scrape of chilli jam (Nigella recipe, still hanging on in there in the fridge since a glut last summer!). Thanks to reading the link, I now know that if I ever see them again I can buy them and freeze them, too! Very MSE - dinner for about 40p a head!:rotfl:

I completely agree on the using every part of the animal (/fish) - I firmly believe that if you're going to eat meat, then you should at least try to use as much of the rest of the animal as possible but what I want to know is why 75% of the recipes had some form of fish?

Not everyone enjoys fish (and it's not for the want of trying either :() and I would far rather have enjoyed seeing at least one other meat/vegetarian option.

    Me too! Yum! Yum!

Those recipes remind me a bit of something Rick Stein said about Michelin starred restaurants being places where you pay to have good food messed about with.
