Not in my store cupboard

Oh dear. I do actually have caviar in my fridge
In my defence, it is not the 'real' stuff, and it is left over from the Christmas starter!
Everything else is pretty normal though...

Oops- forgotten what bottarga is already. Must go back and have another look.
Might be able to find some botulism if I take a swab to that awkward drainy bit at the back.Dum Spiro Spero0 -

I'll just have to make do with truffles I suppose.:('Yaze whit yeh hive an ye'll niver wahnt'

Well, bottarga can be made if not bought cheaply here from roe, a very os ingrediant, and it used to be called poor man's cavier, so if foodies are prepared to pay big bucks perhaps rather than mock with inverted snobbery a true os approach would be to make as good or better than overpriced pots for less and gloat! The ridiculous thing in that recipe is specifying the chicken that lays the eggs. Anything that van expand an os repetoire is worthy of learning about imo.
You need the roe...and it need not be from mullet....and salt and patience. I have not made it, but have chatted to a friend while she showed me hers curing in the salt.
and its not only available in usa or canada, i am familiar with it from italy where i first bought it inexpensively.

My cat, Truffles, applauds your money saving sentiments but would prefer you to invest in some bottarga instead :rotfl:
(Yes, I do really have a cat called Truffles!)A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Started 15/03/2011.

Thank you all for a good early morning chuckle.
Now I though the girl I was at school with in the 80s who bought in two colours of caviar (I have no idea about caviar so it could have been other roe) to decorate the top of a quiche was being ridiculous. Now I have been priven wrong.
I think the most exotic item in my cupboard is a jar of pesto.Put the kettle on.0 -
I have never read so much pretentious claptrap in all my life If this is Camerons 'We are all in it together sort of thing then the litterati of the 'London set' must be living on another planet.
I think I speak for a greater majority of folk on here who would not know a 'bottarga' if it jumped up and bit them on the butt.
I live in a real world where bangers and mash and cheese on toast , 'normal' food is the order of the day.
OK for those that can afford to spend money on over-hyped fish eggs, good luck to them I have tasted caviar and quite honestly I wouldn't give it houseroom
I am so glad I no longer waste my hard pressed pension on national newspapers if this is the sort of tosh they come up with I can rustle up a quick meal from my food cupboards
or fridge /freezer and it wouldn't be squid or ceps or anything else that sounds rather disgusting.
A little while ago I tried some japanese sushi and found it awful and was reminded of the 'Emporers New Clothes story' I lived in London for most of my life and never bought stuff like this I think its only in specific small enclaves of London where you would find soppy beggers buying this sort of stuff0 -
Just to say that I was feeling a little down to-day,but these last few post have had me in stitches. Thank you.0
