The theory of councils being able to build more stock from the sale incomes, only works as long as the sale income is sufficient to allow them to do so.
With the ever-increasing discounts being offered, the chances of councils actually getting sufficient income to replace like for like with new builds, must be slim.
But hey, the government won't care about that. It'll all be the local council's fault.0 -
Yes, I know that,just find those comments very upsetting, not everyone who lives in HA/council house is a scum , like not everyone who lives in private property is a great asset for the country. It's sad how many people presume that.

I suspect if you work out the difference between a market rent and your social rent you aren't a net tax payer
But social housing isn't meant to be making a profit AND it isn't encumbered by the insane rise in house prices - I'm pretty sure that most council housing has long ago been paid for in rent.
It's like saying "Well, you've got 3 children, so if you work out the difference between your free state education and paying for private school then you aren't a net tax payer".
I would wonder how many people will take this up. Surely all the best council housing is long gone, and in big estates they can be difficult to sell on.0 -

If that is the case, what is wrong with that? people should be allowed to do what they like with a house if they have bought it, its theirs. Good luck to them! Seems they have improved their future there ... way better than ending up a council tenant all their lives no? You begrudge people taking advantage of opportunities that come their way? seems you don't like or support entrepreneurial spirit then. To me, anyone who buys their council home, and improves their fortunes and future from it are merely doing what I and many others would do in their situation :T0 -

A few doors down from us three generations of a very nice Bangladeshi family live in a semi-detached five bedroom victorian villa (I am not making this up) owned by the local council
I think their rent should probably be higher given they have three newish cars and I question, given they have just started another new business, whether they should be in council housing at all
What really p***** me off is the thought they should be able to buy that house with a £50k discount, when they have already benefited from years of subsidised rent

True maybe, but those buyers who bought with the discounts had to be tax payers too! they don't give mortgages to people on benefits nor to those who cannot afford a mortgage, so by definition, those that bought are tax payers too.
Govt. handouts to help those people onto the housing ladder after years (some I imagine, even decades) of paying rent for those houses. They paid their way!0 -

Another point, market value on a council house will always be lower than market value on a private house. Council House purchases are always a risk, you may have chav neighbours, drunks, drug addicts, wayward kids, council estates are full of them. Why should they pay more that to buy something that, to be quite honest, I wouldn't buy if they were giving them away? I prefer to pay to live in a quiet, safe area that isn't overrun with masses of noisy kids, which I don't like. So, as they are buying council properties, they deserve them cheaper as most of us out here wouldn't want to live in a private house which is still, sadly, on a council estate.0 -

I can't quite work out whether you genuinely don't understand the fact that Council rents are NOT subsidised or whether your just out trolling... The fact is Council rents are not subsidised and I explained the facts to you in a previous post.
I don't agree with the Council house sell off and I don't have the RTB or RTA.
I would also point out to you that over the years 100,000s of homeowners have had renovation works carried out to their properties paid for by the Council grant system so i'm interested to know your thoughts on that fact..;)0
