Cast iron fireplaces - Weight?

I'm looking at buying a second hand cast iron victorian style fireplace (combinations insert and surround).

Does anyone know how much these things weigh? Is it possible for a lone person to manhandle one in and out of a car for example? Or do they weigh too much?

They do weigh a fair bit. In their heyday, I used to lug these around day in, day out.

If you are looking at a small combination cast then it should fit into a car of decent size ( estate/large hatchback) Anything bigger and i would say rent a van.

Never weighed one, but would think round 80-100kg average. 2 man lift.

I find that the cast firechamber( if it comes with one) weighs more than the fireplace itself 1/2 of the time. I would get someone to help you. Or get someone to pick it up for you instead

Oh dear, thats quite a bit.

Doesnt have a fire chamber though so maybe will be OK.

Otherwise will have to make a plan.

If you are doing it diy then you will need building regs to pass the fireplace installation or get it fitted by a registered Hetas fitter.

If you are diying it then you need to back fill behind the fire and chamfer the edges inside the chimney throat, as a sweep I see many bad installs where the back of cast iron fire surrounds arent back filled, this leads to soot collecting behind the fire which is a fire risk in its self, you also need to seal around the fire surround as well.

If in doubt then get a company to fit it for you.

And us sweeps see all too often dangerous installs, fair enough next time I wont bother - just hope their chimney catches fire or it cant be swept properly...their tough sh it then isnt it :D

I am sick to the back teeth of you HETAS types spamming every thread with your attempts to drum up more business. This is money saving expert, not money making for HETAS expert.

If I ask about installation or sweeping then you can give me the HETAS sales pitch. Until then you can, as the expression goes, "do one".
