    ok - I have to ask - what's a groomsman?

(i have been to many many weddings - just not heard of this)

Weddings have got so much more complicated since my day... multiple foreign hen and stag dos, pre wedding dinners, after parties.. Where do people find the cash, time and energy for all of it?

Sorry for hijacking your thread OP! Hope your wedding goes wonderfully well

i thought I was the only poster who didn't know this :rotfl:

And yes, weddings do seem so much more complicated and expensive nowadays. Whatever happened to having a best man and bridesmaids, wedding and reception, with none of the other things mentioned above?

It's like the male equivalent of bridesmaids (and the best man is the maid of honour :rotfl:) Think they can be quite a nice idea if the groom has say a few brothers or best friends and is struggling to decide on just one for best man but don't think should feel like you have to have all the relatives as one.

I would say that, typically, if there are a lot of men you want to involve in the wedding then it's usual to make them ushers. No one seems to raise eyebrows at vast numbers of ushers but a tribe of groomsmen would look a bit odd. Pick a couple of ushers to hand out orders of service, etc, and let the rest prowl round the edge of the church looking important (on the pretext of checking seating arrangements). It's an "official" job, doesn't require any effort and keeps them visible long enough for people to notice they are "doing" something important.

I've never heard of a master of ceremony at a wedding, I thought they only appeared on old time music halls. It's the best man's job to ensure everything runs smoothly, and the ushers assist him to do that.

all the Master of Ceremonies needs to do is to announce the new Mr and Mrs adamg to the guests at the reception and then to pop up and down at the reception to announce who will be making the next speech. Then his job could be done! He could also announce the throwing of the Brides Bouquet (if he isnt to well away by then) or the Garter (if you are doing that).
If your future wife thinks he is up to it - then let him do it! There really isnt anything else apart from usher and its not usual for the brides uncle to do that.

It depends on the wedding, I (although female) have officiated at over 1,000 weddings as MC. The job involves not only the announcing (the easy part) but ensuring the timings are right for everyone, e.g. making sure the photographer is not running over whilst the main course chicken is overcooking or that the champagne is poured at just the right time for the guests arriving so it is not flat etc.The role is usually done by the Food and Beverage Manager at the hotel, as you really do have to have some-one who knows what he/she is doing. This is the role that makes or breaks a wedding, it is not a job for a guest.

I agree not everyone needs a job, however if you do want him to have a job, best to have him as an usher, holding open doors, directing people, handing out hymn sheets etc.

What about person who pays for the wedding? Not one that a lot of people go for but will really be appreciated
Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.

Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.

Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of what you can’t change

There must have been a helluva lot of broken weddings in the past.
