So, does anyone have the answer to my query - ie if my son got a Motability car would I have to hand it over to his dad once a fortnight or would me dropping him off & picking him up be acceptable?

My ex is a gambling addict and can't be trusted with anything of value...

    Sorry, missed the message.
The awarded person can nominate two people to be on the insurance. However under the new rules, they have to live within 5 miles of the nominated person.
If your husband lives further away than that he cannot be insured to drive the car anyway.
If two othere persons are nominated to drive the car, he cannot be insured to drive the car.

According to google maps he lives 5.2 miles from us. If my son got a mobility car I'd want myself and a friend who takes my son regularly to be on the insurance - thought the ex might have a claim on the car as the father, but hopefully not. :)

Talk to Motability about the 5 mile rule, it will be relaxed under certain circumstances.

Thats not entirely correct. If you were awarded the HRMC before 65 you continue to recieve it after 65

    Yes. My "claim" meant "apply".

I take it you have both a national pension and a private pension then I say this as people on national pension only do suffer the same as disabled interms of disposable income and many cannot afford supermarket deliver To many of them its food or heat. You are very lucky to live in an area with milk deliveries, thats not the same with many places.
You cannot get the reduced prices in the supermarkets from their on line delivery, such as sell by date food reduced to shift that day.

I would campaign for a better national pension for all pensioners, yes.

Yes. (Yes, I have a private pension.) But my point is that people cannot apply for the mobility component after the age of 65. So, your previous points apply only to people under 65 or people over 65 who were awarded mobility DLA before they were 65.

I have an answer. tiamai_d started this thread and your issues have nothing to do with it. I suggest that you start your own rather than derail this one along with the troll(s).

I added it to this one as the queries were similar - ie both regard the rules when the car belongs to the child and not the adult driver. It appears that no one really knows the answer to either query - it would be useful if motability had clear rules on this matter.

Thats correct. The governments theory as I see it is that they beleive they have put in other areas of help for over 65 people away from Motability.
    Not my view however.

The rules are very hazy when the car is for a child. But do call them and speak to them, they were nice on the phone to me.
  • I got my motability car 14 months before i passed my driving test. Obviously i was learning to drive in it, but mainly my Dad used it for work. I don't see the problem- your insured, your covered. Why go stir a big pot when there is no need to?

I would say it was wrong/selfish to use it solely for journeys that benefit yourself, but your obviously not doing that.
